Current Project: Team Teile CLK DTM2000 Mercedes
Brand: Tamiya
Scale: 1/24
Paints Used: Tamiya Enamels, Gunze lacquer based and Gunze metallic coat for steel colour.
Modifications made: Suspensions (my 2nd try at getting the suspensions right) Using zinc wires. Prebend them on a more solid object like a small screw driver and taking them out to fit on the suspensions.
High points of this models: Noted for its decals. Thats why I am trying my hand on this model
As you can see my painting isnt that good yet, still needs alot more training.... :D
1st Pic: Getting the engines to shine and pre-placing them to make sure they fit.

2nd to 4th Pics: Putting in the radiator parts.

3rd Pic: Front view.

5th Pic: Overall view.

Paint job needs touching so will fine tune whatever needs to be done and keep this thread updated whenever I can.
Any comment/s do post. I welcome all criticism! :smoka:
Any tips will surely benefit me too.
Stay tune!!

Nice idea with the straws!
If you are planning to sand the seams off the tyres I've noticed sanding much easier if you give the seam a light coat of superglue. It makes the rubber hard and much easier to sand off. But try it first at some scrap part to know how it works and to avoid ruining your model.

Alot of the merc's consisted of flat black, semi gloss black, so I got sick of the monotony of using black and added intermediate blue to the seats.
Also, tiny buttons in the interior didnt require other colours like titangold.
Just felt that according to the instruction manual, the colour variety would make this merc look boring.
Any comments you've got, I luv to hear it.

grrr, that metal mercedes emblem is so hard to put on. Having no luck and after the 7th try I am taking a short break.
Anyone knows where the other piece of the metal with numbers goes to?
It doesnt say anywhere in the manual where to put it.
If its not pose to be on/in the car, where do U guys put it on?

This is the one that I am using, you can buy it from the DIY shop at Tiong Bahru 2nd floor. Sorry cant remember the name of the shop I think its Shelf-fix or something but there's only 1 DIY shop so you cant miss it.
Its bright cos its for using with a flashlight. Using only 1 AAA battery. Although it says 1.2v/0.3A and a normal AAA is 1.5v, it doesnt matter.
I have a little problem with finding a place to put the batt though in my 1st project, the SUB so I skipped that n decided to put it in my merc. This merc has ample space for a AAA casing but I realised that since the merc's engine was in front, there's no hiding the wirings.
But I went ahead anyways.
Here's the pic of the bulb:

As I said, from one surprise into the other!
Maybe you can try using a bit smaller wiring and then bring them to the back, between body and door panels. The back should be big enough for the batteries. The only downside is that you probably will see the wiring under the hood. But of you paint them black, the visibility will be minimal. But you'll have to use smaller wires then. Just an idea. ;)

Thxs for your feedback huudo.
I have smaller wirings. The thing is the present wiring I have has been soldered with metal pcs that fit very nicely onto the bulb pins.
If I use my smaller wirings, I need to re-solder and also really dont have much time to shop for the metal pcs plus I dont have the skill to solder such small pins yet :D
I'll try to see what I can do.
Maybe for this project, I'll just go ahead and try to finish it and camou the present wirings in black.

this shows that a thougrough planning is always needed before you start the actual buidling. Throwing in unplanned stuff at mid-stage may give you troubles in the sence of "making compromises" which can effect the outcome. But if you're having fun and you love doing it, then there is no problem ;) Something to keep in mind if you ask me. :D

This is 1 pc of advise that has changed my mind and I have decided not to add in the lights for this project.
For this main reasons, this merc shows off the front engine and with the current eq like the wirings I have, it'll be quite messy.
Being inexperienced with soldering didnt help at all.
Like you said, no proper pre-planning, just spur of the moment thing.
Just not me to leave a project halfdone but oh well, perhaps the next one.
Thanks huudo for your frank input :)

The Merc looks awsome, it's coming along quite well! As for the lights, have you thought about putting the car on a base, mabye painted up to look like a piece of race track. Then you could run the wires down behind the tires and in to the base and make a place for the batteries under the car and put a switch for the lights on the edge of the base.

Thanks for your support tankie, I know I can count on you that includes Asmenoth ;)
Asmenoth, your idea is great! But I dont think I will want to go into there just yet.
The whole idea of the merc is to show off the internal engine and the decals for this model.
Ok let me show you the top view with the bulbs and wires in.
That space will be very compact when the engine goes in.
Although I can camouflage the wires with black paint, it'll still be very noticeable.
The other thing is, the yellow arrow is pointing just above where the wires are pose to hide. With the current wires, there's no way it will hide in there. So I need to change to a smaller wire which means 2 things:
1)Solder the wire and 2) find 2 extremely small connectors to connect to the bulb pins and solder the wires to the small connectors.
Quite discouraging for a ammatuer like me :D
Perhaps my next project, Opel Holzer would be suitable to have the lights but then again I realised that the Holzer's lamp are very small lol

Glary view of the merc becos of my flash. Sorry will post a better one.
The metal pc U see supporting the front hood was custom made. Just bend them
and hook them to the side of the merc so that you can close and open your
hood anytime.

Pic10:
Based on the actual merc again, the mesh grills are pose to be in silver and
not black as stated in the manual. So a you need to spray that if you want.

Very close up view of my merc. Comparing with the actual merc.
Remember to align the mesh so that they line up horizontaly. It will show
very clearly if your mesh is not placed properly!

Ok, will post the entire full view of my merc another day for outdoor
shots.
Any comments whether good or bad, just post it up. I dont mind them if there's
truth in it.
From where I left off, putting on the front skirting.

Problems encountered during pre-fitting. Yellow circles mark gaps.

Putty Time! :D No more gaps.

Pic6:
Showing you the actual DTM merc with the colours of blue.
If you have bought this merc, you'll find that Tamiya's shade for the front
side is of lighter shade of blue. The real merc's body and the skirting of
the real merc has only 1 shade of blue.

Pic7:
So off comes out the decals for spraying.
Take note that I have already put on the decals before finding out the true
shade. So if you are doing do this, dont be like me, spray before you put
on the decals.

Once done it should look like this

Chain, you did a great job on the Merc!! Well done! And a good research too on the way. And I guess you've learned a couple of things as well. So remember. If you do a racer, research the subject thouroughly. Get pictures of the real-one and compare colours, forms etc. If you think about adding stuff, think about it first and dry fit, even before you started something, then you get an idea on how to do it. Keep in mind, that everything is possible, only you're imagination and ablilities are limiting factors in this, but you need to plan in advance.
Once again, Nice job!!
Huudo, the Mercedes man!! :D

Super work and photograpy! Some of those pictures could be mistaken for the 1:1 car.
Is it just my imagination or doesn't this kit feature any internal door trim?

By internal door trim you mean, I didnt draw the door line?
If thats what you meant then yes, I had place the decals first, realising only too late and abit risky for me.
Anyways, thanks again all for your kind comments.
See U at my next project!

I think you're thinking about panel lines. I was refering to the internal plastic parts that form the inside of the doors. They should be black or carbon fibre. Your model seems to just be flat and painted off white in this area. Just checked my unbuilt kit and Tamiya defintely provide them to go on the sides of the tub. Did you forget to fit them?
Don't mean to sound like I'm harping - it is very nice build-up, you may as well include all the parts right?

Oh, yes they are included U're right.
I didnt glue them cos I wanted them to be able to be taken out and display part by part: a)Car cover, b)cockpit with roll cage, and c)chasis part. If I put in the internal door trims, it would be hard to photograph the details in the cockpit.
Anyways, there are some mistakes with this model. I am still going tru the motion of getting my skills up and along the way, I would definitely make some mistakes.
If you see those mistakes, I wont mind if you point them out too. Its fine with me.
In fact, there are 5 mistakes with this model.
1)The internal door trims I have purposely left out
2)No door panel lines drawn. This I explained earlier. Applied decals first when I should have drawn the lines first.
3)Where's the front shield wiper :D
4)Painting near the front lights didnt blend in correctly as much as I wanted to.
5)If you noticed the front mirrors, they arent the right decals.
My main target and challenge for this model was this:
1)Test of decals application. (I think I passed this one)
2)Modifying the suspension and getting it done right. (Still not so good, need more practice)
3)Putting in lights (Not enuff pre-planning)
4)Researching and getting this model as detailed as possible according to the real car. Not so good, perhaps next project, I'll try harder.
As I have said earlier, as long as there's truth in your criticism, opinions and feedbacks, I am fine with it. No worries, I can take as well as handle them.
I rather people here be frank with me. That way I know I cant fool you guys as well as myself ;)
