1989jeepxj

Hey everyone...
I seem to be hearing more and more about the ignition problems in 1989 Jeep cherokees... I just recently bought one... It was a theft recovery and the harness that plugs into the ignition was cut off... i replace the column and the ignition plug.. but then i turn on the key and all i got was the fuel pump priming up... no ignition... Looked at the wiring and its all good... Now i turn the key and no fuel pump sound... IS THIS THE STARTER RELAY? If not can anyone tell me exectly where the wires go on the ignition switch maybe i have something wrong down there..... Also my Temperature gauge is jumpin up as i turn the key tryin to crank it... are these problems related?
