Is anyone farmiliar with a starter cone? My car just died on me on Wednesday(its now friday) and my check engine light was blinking like crazy, so as i was pulling in to a parking lot, it just stopped. Then this cloud of smoke with a nasty smell came out of the tail pipe. My engine light had been steadily on because of a possible Emission Sensor issue. But when the mechanics called me, they said the starter cone is bad. Could it still be my Emission Sensor after they fix this first? How does a starter cone kill your car when its already running is what im confused about.

Hi there.

I never heard of a Starter Cone, but a search found this:

The starter bolts to the engine (http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/#) and drives the flywheel that is mounted to the crank. The trans shouldn't affect it and realistically it's almost impossible to bolt them together "wrong".

Does the engine backfire?
You could have problems inside the engine, like a leaking headgasket.
If the crank starts to spin and a cylinder is full of fluid, like coolant or fuel from a leaking fuel, the engine will do what we call "hydro lock".
You can't compress a liquid like you can air. If there is fluid in there the engine will STOP. That will blow the nose right off of a working starter.

Does the car run okay?

Hope this helps, because it sounds like there are some serious problems with your car that just replacing the starter or cone aren't going to address.

That article you have pretty much comes close. My mechanic called and said the starter is on. Next he said that coolant leaked into the cylinders and thats why my car just stopped. Im now wondering if a different mechanic I know fixed my "pump" earlier this year and im wondering if thats the cause. The current mechanic who have my car said he needs to pull off the manifold. 9 times of 10 he said my car should be fine. Any of this make sense? I 'm hoping the phone call tommorrow will be good!

since you did not fix the problem earlier most likely the engine and other componets got damaged by the coolant leak getting into the combustion chambers...when this leak is repaired you may luck out..and find it does run...

the coolant leak into the combustion chamber is why your LT was on....the O2 sensor is now damaged...
