Re: 2001 ford taurus fuel pump wont turn on!!

My first suggestions would be to try a new or different fuel pump relay, which i believe to be located in the engine commpartment fuse box or next to it. If you haven't, you should check for power as close to the pump as possible when it doesn't want to run. I'd also check to be sure you have ground. When testing these things, wiggle the wires around while checking for power and ground so to be sure you don't have a loose connection. You may want to check the wiring before the relay. There also is a fuel safety switch in the fuel pump power line, but I don't suspect it is you problem as it wouldn't give you such erratic power. Does the gas gauge continue to work correctly when the fuel pump doesn't?

yes the gas gadge works correctly when the fuel pump wont turn on! we have swaped all the relays around and still no use! we have also reset the emergeny fuel shut of switch. we are curious if we need to disconnect the battery to restart the computer system? do you have any other sugestions?

Thank you very much for your time and you information

How are you determining that the fuel pump won't turn on? Are you checking for voltage to the pump, or just checking for fuel pressure? Have you changed the fuel filter recently, and if so, are you sure it's installed in the correct orientation? The fuel filters are directional.

I have the same problem, my car will not start. If it does start it will run for just a sec and then die. Sometimes it will run for awhile and then when I shut it of it willl not run. Did you fix your problem?

Re: 2001 ford taurus fuel pump wont turn on!!

we have looked at the fuel filter and it is fine. we checked to see if the fuel pump is working by hooking up to a voltage machine. I am not sure what its called. My dad did it, i am just there to hand him the tools because its my car. The full pump seems to be working just fine. So we rest the emergancy fuel shut off switch again. still no use. We are geting fuel pressure. At least that is what my dad said. SO we tried switching the relays around and now we have no fuel pressure. I have a feeling that hes making it worse(lol). But he believes that it has to be on of the relays. we bought a owner manual, but off course the one shown in the diagrams does not even come close to anything on my car, so he is not sure whitch relay it is! or even if it is a relay! we are towing it to a mechanic friend down the road, and he is going to hook it up to the computer to get a diagnostic code. If my dad knows what wrong with it he can fix it, but the problem we are having is finding the problem. if you have any ideas please please let me know. I really cant afort to take it in for repairs. Thanks for all of your help

Sounds a bit like your dad is just checking things but not necessarily approaching this methodically. Maybe in addition to handing him tools you should consider taking notes, documenting voltages from the Volt Meter/DMM/Multi-meter, documenting which relays are being moved from where to where, checking voltages to the various relay terminals, recording fuel pressure readings, etc.

The results you are reporting are really too sporatic to draw much a conclusion from at this point.
