98 jimmy heating problems

This morning on the way to work my gauge went straight to 220 in about a half of a mile. Then it went back to about 190 and then back to hot again. Also my heat would also come and go. Is the therm. or maybe the rad cap?

First thing make sure it is full of coolant.
Let it cool down and remove rad cap and make sure rad is full and check overflow tank coolant level.
If that is good check/replace the stat.

Ok my over is empty. What is this for? I took my therm. out and looks to be fine. My rad. has a small leak around the fin where my top rad. hose is.... it looks to be plastic does that sound right. Any there any way to repair it or am i going to have to replace it.

The over flow tank is there to keep the rad full.
For help you need to give us the info on it.
Was the rad low?
You can not tell by looks of the stat.
A lot of things may look good but be bad inside.
If you have stat out why not replace it.
The plastic tank rad's are throw away.
If it is leaking replace it.

I've drive it since i took the stat out. I put some quick steel putty on the leak for know(no leak) and its running about 190-195 and staying there not going back and forth. I did notice when i took the stat. out that i heard a vapor lock sound i guess that meant it was sealing properly? I think i'm going to start looking for a rad. this weekend.

3 time asking and still waiting?
Was the rad low to start with?
Did you replace stat or just take it out?

Sorry about that i guess i mis-read it. No replace stat yet. And the rad. was a little low.

If rad was low that could be the heat up problems.
Also check and fix all of the leak or leaks.
If rad is leaking it is best to replace it.
Check around on a new afternarket rad.
Putty on it is only a band aid fix.
Any time you have the stat out is a good time to replace it.
Also flush old coolant and replace the rad cap.
