po401 code egr valve

I have a check engine light and got the code that says poor egr flow. The guy at the store suggested I take it off and clean it up. Should help it because the code suggests the egr is ok.

My question is how the heck do you get it off there is like no room. Any special tool or tips?

I dunno about the 99... but on my 94 I found it easiest to take the EGR off as an assembly with the tube connecting to the exhaust.

Re: po401 code egr valve

I looked around this board and found a huge amounts of po401 posts and most say the egr is normally fine but a sensor infront of it called dpfe Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor or as autozone calls it egr valve pressure sensor su2108 (2 year warr) . I replaced mine for 55.00 and went over 50 miles with no light on time will tell though. wish me luck.

Yes... I would bet that you will find your EGR all gummed up with gook... you might have some luck at cleaning it out, but a new one would only be $50 or so.

Re: po401 code egr valve

I did get a can of seafoam. They said to get some in the throttle body and in the pvc/brake vaccum line to get the product into the top end. So I did all that and poured the rest into the gas tank. While first looking at the throttle body, I did see more discoloration then my other car had. So I'll give the seafoam time to work and then look again.

Re: po401 code egr valve

If anyone wants to get the EGR valve off of a 94 Escort, I think the tool to use to unscrew the metal tube that comes from the exhaust manifold & fits into the bottom of the EGR valve, would be a 1-1/16" crowsfoot refrigeration wrench - with 6 points. (and use of plenty of penetrating oil). It would take a pretty good 'tool' store to have one though.

I'm not a big NAPA fan anymore but they can probably get you the tool overnight. Prepare to pay though!
