2007 Elantra timing belt

My daughter is considering buying a 2007 4 cylinder Elantra. I see in a previous post for an older Elantra the timing belt should be replaced at 60k miles.

Is 60k still the recommended replacement interval?

What is the approximate dealer or independent shop cost to replace the belt?

Any other comments (good or bad) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Randy

Re: 2007 Elantra timing belt

It's usually 60,000 miles, but I can't find it for sure. All Elantras up to 2004 are 60,000.

I quoted $229 for my 1999 Elantra at a local shop, so I opted to buy one for $18 and do it myself.

Re: 2007 Elantra timing belt

Thanks very much for the info. My daughter lives several hours from us so a shop replacement is most likely.

Did you find the belt replacement to be difficult? Did it require special tools or experience?

Re: 2007 Elantra timing belt

I haven't done it yet, I found out I still have 30,000 miles left. I doesn't look abnormally hard, it is a pain in the butt job, but if you've already done a timing belt in a FWD car before, you'd know what I mean. The only tricky part I see is that it doesn't have a spring loaded tensioner like a Toyota, Volvo, or Honda. It had the kind of tensioner that you kind of set by hand, tighten down the locking bolt, and measure the amount of deflection when you push on the belt, just like my old Chevette 25 years ago.
