Starter about to Die? -- 97 Gr Crvnstb100 09-10-2008, 10:02 AM When I try to start the van, sometimes it fires right up strong. Others, it takes 2 or 3 tries and does different stuff when i turn key: motor turns slow...or there's a click and a groan...or nothing at all. Has brand new battery--thought that was the problem. It's a '97 ES w/ 3.8 L So, any sure bets on cause? If starter, how tough is that to replace? THANKS Steve Mbriggs 09-10-2008, 01:18 PM My experience with starters (replaced 4 on caravans) is that it's either a click and nothing, or a normal start. A slow turnover might indicate something else. The telltale is when it gets bad enough, you have to whack the starter with something to get the car to start. You can remove it and have it tested for free at Autozone or Advance, but access to the top bolt is tight. Remember to disconnect the battery first! I didn't the first time and got a good jolt! angus10 09-10-2008, 01:34 PM Check the connections first. Also check the connections at the alternator and the grounds on the motor. Two bolts and two wires. Often it is the connection, but they are so easy to take off. I would take it off and go down to autozone or a similer place. Most of these places have a testing machine that will test if your starter is good or bad. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
