1991 Loyale starting issues...

Hi all! This is my first time posting about my Subby, so bear with me. I was driving home, the other night, and the motor simply quite and the tach blipped a bit, but dropped to nothing. My first thought was a crankshaft position sensor, but I'm not sure. Now the car won't start. It does crank, but it seems like there's no fuel. I have not tested for spark or fuel, yet, though, but I'll do that tomorrow. Any ideas?

Judging by your subject line you must be driving SPFI.

We still need more information about your vehicle: mileage, manintenance history.

It may be a matter of bad fuse. I would start with that.

When you try to start your car open a door and listen to the humming comming from the rear of the vehicle. That would indicate that your fuel pump is running. It should last for about 2 seconds. If car does not start the fuel pump will shut off. This is a safety feature.

Good luck,

Sam

Ok, so after pulling a plug and grounding it out, I found the car didn't have any spark. I immediately thought about the crank angle sensor. I checked the ignition rotor and it was fine as well as the distributor. Then, on a whim, I check the timing belts. Well, the driver's side belt was gone...lol... And that's the side that runs the distributor, so that's why I wasn't getting spark. I'll replace the belt and let you all know what happens!

The last time I replaced my timing belt I had to change the timing idler sproket. Make sure it does not have any play in it.

And of course replace the crankshaft seal: the main source for oil leak on this engines. Water pump is a good candidate as well.

Good luck,

Sam
