94 Pickup needs new engine

Hey folks - my brother has a 94 Toyota pickup with the 22RE engine - apparently the last model year before Toyota started the Tundra/Tacoma names. 4wd and manual transmission, regular cab with about 150K miles on it.

It's in the process of munching a bearing and he's debating whether to rebuild or replace with a used engine. He's not the kind of guy to just replace one bearing, and everything else on the truck is fine.

Question is, what years will be a direct swap without too much monkeying around? Has anyone had good success with certain replacement engines? And can he use a 22RE from a non-truck application?

Time is not really an issue, since he's also got his 07.

Thanks in advance...

Fred

Re: 94 Pickup needs new engine

I used a 22re out of an early 90s celica. We had to change the intake, oil pan, oil pickup, motor mounts and the cluster of sensors on top of the valve cover. Other than that there were no problems.

Re: 94 Pickup needs new engine

Thanks derrickprice; he's going the used junkyard route also. I think he's found an engine from a similar vehicle.

Re: 94 Pickup needs new engine

Any 22RE from 85-95 will work. The closer the year and application to yours, the less there will be to change between the two.

Re: 94 Pickup needs new engine

Thanks guys! He's got the replacement engine and a buddy is helping him get it in; I'll post back if they have any issues....it's from a 92 truck I think so should be a minimum of problems. Thanks again...
