2000 malibu weird smell when changing temp

I just got a used 00 malibu and every time when a/c temp knob is moved even slightly towards the right (warm) the air smells like syrup??? Syrup that you put on pancakes! Where could there be syrup?

The sweet smell is probably coolant, I would consider your heater core.
