Corvette C5-R's (nearly complete) - I'm off to the race!!

This is my first post, after browsing for a while now. Below are a couple C5-R's I've done. Many, many body mods have been done on both of these cars. The body came as one piece, the all yellow LeMans car had the hood cut off, and the Texas car had the hood and rear removed.

The Texas paint scheme is not quite finished. I was hoping to get it completed before leaving for Sebring International Raceway tommorow to get the cases signed, but 'fraid not. I'll be taking lots of pics of the real ALMS (American LeMans Series) cars, if anyone needs any detail pics, just let me know by posting here, or by PM. I'll get it for ya if I can. Enjoy!

The Entire Corvette team are pretty good at autographs. My last experience w/the Audi team though.....thats a different story. Frank Biela and Tom Kristiansan wouldn't sign an 8yr old childs Audi Car in a case because it "wasnt a race they won"....Fellows is a good guy, so is O' Connell, also the Ferrari Drivers will only grunt at you because they dont speak a word of english.......I have many autographs from the drivers. Hope you get them signed!!!!

Very nice!! I just bought this kit yesterday, and am going to use it to practice polishing, and opening hoods, etc. What paint did you use? Looks kinda like Camel Yellow TS34. This is the paint I was planning to use.

Have fun.;)
The body is molded fairly thick and reqires alot of time and patience if you want to do it correctly.

Ya, I know. That was the first thing I noticed when I opened the box. The body is at least twice as thick as a Tamiya. But this is a little encouragement. Only downside to it, is it means I have to paint the body in 4 pieces... main body, hood, fascia, and wing. I suppose I could tape the pieces together after I cut it open, but I'm not sure I want to...

Mine is currently sitting on my desk doing the same thing.
I'm doing the 2000 Texas Mosport version and I need to figure out how to match up the paint job on the body pieces.....

Your cutting is looking good. Did you just use the hobby knife sharp side to dull side to sharp side routine?

Ah..last years Enduro car...where are you going to get the decals?
I used a dental probe to scribe the starting lines then used a xacto.
This took alot of time but worked.
The parts still need some sanding though.

This kit contains decals for the #2 car and #3 (driven by the Earnhardts) as well as decals for the #63 and #64 cars. #63 has a canadian driver, so I'm building it... #2 has one as well, but I like the decal scheme with the #63 car. There's a few inconsistencies between the kit and the reference pics, but nothing too serious. The funnest one is going to be trying to get the two center headlights fabricated and dropped in. I really wan those lights. I hate the licence plate knockout on the vettes.

If you go to my web site posted in my signature, you can see that I did this car in a Ferrari Hybrid that alot we're pleased w/. I'm a HUGE ALMS fan and a HUGE C5-R fan so I've done my fair share of models of this car. I have also done the 98' version of this car also listed on that site.
Brian

BTW:The Canadian driver is Ron Fellows...the GTS points leader for the past 2 years...;)

BTW...the inconsistances are the fact that the car changes every race and the kit you are posting is the Daytona kit compared to the LeMans 24hr race car. Plus a year separates them.;)

C5-R's take 1st and 3rd in GTS class!!!!

I'm back from the race and it was a blast! I met the drivers of these cars and (Fellows, and O'connell) they were stand up guys, very nice people.

To answer a few of the questions. They were painted with Testors Model Masters "Blue Angels Yellow". That color IMO has just the right tinge of orange in it to be close enough without mixing any thing with it.
The white on the Texas car is Testors' Boyd's white.

Around the cut lines I thined the body slightly with a dremmel, being VERY careful with it. To make the actual cut i used a Jewlers blade. Its a very small thin blade with teeth on all edges. It fits in a standard coping saw, but i didn't use the saw, just the blade. The trick is to stay perpendicular with the body at all times. And go Slow! If you cut around the latches and leave them as part of the hood, all of the pieces stay together well, and you hardly need tape.

To paint the body, I taped it together and sprayed it. I touched up the edges with yellow, white, and black to match the decals. I had problems with color coming through on white decals, so I made sure that white was below the decal on the Texas car. Below is how i painted it to make the decals nice and white.

I hope this helped!!

Welcome to AF Matt. :)
Excellent work on those Corvettes, they both are amazing.

The blade was from Zona tools. It's so tiny i couldn't get my digital camera to focus well. But I used the 2/0 size. .02"X.01"x56TPI (teeth per inch). The width of the blade was the same size as the seam.
I picked it up at the local HobbyTown USA. They come 12 to a pack for $3.00 or so.

I found a pic of the package. 12 tiny blades are bundled together inside the tube.
