Smile wont idle good when cold

hi guys i am working on a 2000 beetle 1.8 turbo, auto.when this car is cold it has a rough idle and i lose the vaccum to the booster(brake pedal gets hard will barely stop car)the air pump sounds really loud but i dont know if this has anything to do with it.it acts like a g.m. car with a stuck e.g.r valve but as soon as its warm it does fine.i unplugged the m.a.f and it smoothed out some but could just be making it rich.it is showing a p0010 cam sensor code if this could be related. i am a car mechanic i just dont see many v.w.s (this is my girlfriends car)so if you have to get technical thats fine. thanks guys GOD BLESS. p.s car seems to do it worse (idles rough almost dies)when you drop it in gear. if any one could help that would be great, thanks.

Re: wont idle good when cold

Under the intake manifold theres breather hoses and a brake booster mechanical vaccum pump assembly. Common issue on the 1.8t engines. Its about 500.00 in parts plus some extra hose clamps and such. Just pull the engine cover and look down between the intake runners and look for oil residue. Also the lines go from the block to the valve cover then to the intake pipe. check those hoses also.

Re: wont idle good when cold

thanks ill try that.by the way what does the electric air pump that connects to the air box and also to a valve (looks like an e.g.r. valve) on the side of the engine do.it runs for about the first minute or so that the car is running.is this the same pump you are talking about or not. thanks so much

Re: wont idle good when cold

it is not the same pump, thats the secondary air pump. It just puts extra air into the exhaust side of the head as startup for emissions.

Re: wont idle good when cold

i looked like you said, and i do see the hose go from the booster line and the intake and also the valve cover, it looks to me like they tie together and go in to the top of the oil filter housing assembly,is the vacuum pump built into this assembly.also do you think the pump is bad, or a line. i checked for a vac.leak by spraying lines with carb.cleaner and did not find any. thank you so much

Re: wont idle good when cold

the vacuum mechanical pump is located right under the driver side front corner of the intake, there is a long (8in) plastic L shaped hose with a little foam ring arround it that goes to the pump. The pump is a y shaped plastic deal about 3" long and 1" round with small nipples on the end. The valve normally brakes internally so vacuum isnt supplied to the booster causing the electric brake booster vacuum pump to run all the time and melt.
