97 Camry will not start when Hot!

Hello, I have a 97 Camry 4cyl. The car runs great but recently when I drive it for more than 20 min and shut it off it will not start. I have to wait approx. an hour and then it starts up fine and will run for hours until I shut it off again. Any Suggestions?

When you turned the ignition key, did the stater turn? Did it make any clicking sound?

No clicking sound, no sound at all. All devices operational, ex. wipers, radio, etc. Also battery and starter replaced within last 2 months.

Simple stuff? Tap on the starter relay and/or the starter when starting. Remove the starter relay and reinstall. That may clean corrosion off the pins. Jump start the car using jumper cables. If it starts, you have a battery or battery connection problem. Wiggle the gearshift lever while starting. This may convince a neutral start switch to cooperate. Make sure the battery connections both on the battery posts and the engine and chassy ground studs are clean and tight. Wiggle the battery cables while starting. They can fail internally with no visible indications.

If you have experience with a meter and schematics download the starting system schematic in your factory maintenence manual found at the top of the forum under "Factory Service Manuals". Start by determining if the coil in the starter relay is getting voltage when you turn the key. You can probably figure it out from there. If not, come on back.

No experience? Find the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood on the driver's side fender wall. It may be labeled "ST Relay". Put your finger on the relay and turn the key:
> If you feel it click, you may have another bad starter, or loose/corroded connection on the starter, fried contacts on the relay (change it), or broken wire from the relay to the starter.
> If it doesn't click, your ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or engine computer could be bad. Another possibility is if your Camry has a Theft Deterrent system. If equiped, it supplies the ground for the starter relay coil.

Unfortunately for such a simple system, there are many things that can create a no rotation issue. It just takes a process of illimination to find the culprit.

Re: 97 Camry will not start when Hot!

Here is the easiest check, remove and clean your battery connections.
A test for this is to turn on your head lights and have someone try to start the car, watch the headlights for how much they fluctuate, they should NOT go out completely. If they do, that is indicative of a compromised connection.
Well he said the battery and starter were replaced. So given what we have it is still a simple system to debug, because there is no starter activity. If you said you heard nothing at all then connect a jumper wire from the starter solenoid actuator terminal, (this is the small wire that the ignition switch is connected to), to the positive battery post. Connect the battery last as this should engage the starter.
If your starter engages then immediately double check that it wont start from the ignition switch. If it still does not start from the switch then your problem is in the wiring most likely ignition switch.
If it does not engage the starter then you need to return the starter and solenoid, depending on where it was from there is a good chance that it was not thoroughly tested especially under elevated thermal conditions, the cheaper suppliers are notorious for this type of rebuild quality.
Let us know what you discover as you proceed and the forum will help you along the way.
Good luck.
