how do you extract the battery from 99 VW Beetle?

Hi, guys:

I apologize for asking what I think is an embarrassing and a dumb question, but I need help in figuring out how to extract the battery out of my beetle.

The problem is that the battery is partially hidden under the side front cover and it does not allow me to pull the battery vertically. Everything is so tight. Please see the picture at http://www.flickr.com/photos/7469737@N05/2674031110/

I do not have a repair manual and was wondering if I need to remove the front outer fender or something along these lines. What is the proper way to extract the battery?
