If you take very good care of a 99 or 2000 Grand Cherokee how long can you expect the motor to last with no major problems? 100k 150k 200k???????????
I have been looking into getting a Grand Cherokee but I am on a limited budget, I was looking for a Grand Cherokee 99 or newer but with my budget all of them I have found have had around 100k on them.
So I thought about getting a regular Cherokee because I can get one with less miles but I really like the Grand Cherokee a lot better. But I dont want to get one and it only last for another 10 or 20000 miles.
Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Grand Cherokee engines are very reliable. My sister owns a '96 with 95,000 miles on it and there are no problems at all with the engine. The engine in this Jeep has been abused beyond belief and it still keeps going. It's been run 15,000 miles before without an oil change. After it ran dry my mother put 5 quarts of oil back in it and drove another 5000 miles before actually getting the oil changed. Since my sister took over she changes the oil maybe every 6-8000 miles which is still horrible considering they recommend every 3000 miles. I'd say you would be safe until about 150,000 before any major problems may occur. 200,000 miles on any engine is a lot but I'm sure that with the right maintenance the Jeep can do it.

I have 142,000 miles on my 1996 Grand Cherokee (5.2L V8) and take it off-road in mud and thick sand on the beach quite frequently. I change the oil every 3,000 miles and the powertrain has never given me a problem. Grand Cherokee powertrains are very good to start with and with normal daily driving the engine should last at least until 175-200K miles. Good luck in your search.

I have a 94 Grand Cherokee with 140K. I personnally would never buy another one. I bought mine new in 94 and have had all the recommended maint. done and more, yet have had the following problems:

1. The Transmission went at 55K
2. The Catalytic converter crumbled went at 45K
3. The Exhaust Manafold sprung a leak at 60K
5. The ECM went at 100K
6. The Four wheel Drive broke at 75K.
7. The Alternator went at 103K, just to name a few.

I will never buy another Chrysler product. I'm going back to Toyota and Honda. I recommend you do the same. You get what you pay for.

Any info would be helpful. Thanks!I have a 1998 GC with 182,000 miles on it. It is the six cylinder model with rear wheel drive.
Knock on wood, it still runs great and drives fine. If the vehicle you are looking at appears to be well maintained then it should go a long way.

My '96 has 130,000 and no real problems. Doesn't use a drop of oil either!

By the way it is the straight six motor, not the V8.

I purchased my 95 JGC in March 2002 w/ 96K on it, I change the oil w/ semi-synthetic every 4K miles, changed transmission fluid & filter at 125K, now it has 135K no problems, no oil usage. The only minor problem I have had is the water pump has been replaced twice. First time cost me $130 second time was warrenty (2 months later).

I own a 97 GC 6-cyl and I just encountered my very first problem yesterday! The ECM (engine control module) is dead. Cost to repair = $500
Mileage = ~157,000
Heavy freeway driving every week.
Oil change every 3000-5000 miles - only because 3000 miles comes very quick for me.
Absolutely love it and will buy a newer one very soon!

Sounds to me like Cholley1066 is jumping to conclusions and basing lifelong decisions and opinions on a isolated experience.

I would suggest he gives Jeep another chance in the future, cause I think they are great cars and maybe he just got a bad egg/lemon.

I have 2 jeeps. 87 cherokee and 2001 GC. the 87 cherokee already has 280,000 miles on it(6cyl)No leaks, Great compression, and I drive it more than my GC being that my GC sucks more gas. I'm telling you, jeeps last long just as any other cars, just maintain it well. Every now and then you'll have some bad apples but i'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Have fun..

Everyone should listen to Diverdtz, he obviously knows what he is talking about, and maybe Cholley1066 is a bitter Jeep owner who secretly works for Ford!!
Just kidding...

I seen a 95 Grand Cherokee 5.2L with 307,000 maintained on schedule religiously, and he said he hasn't had any major problems at all. mine had 192,000 b4 it went, not trying to discourage u but I had an overheating problem, after blocking my radiator, and like 2 months later the engine went, if I would have replaced the radiator like I should have when I noticed it getting hotter then normal, I wouldn't have had any problems.

the things u mentions besides the ECM and Tranny are things u can expect in any vehicle. I admit u shoudln't have had any tranny problems. and ECM well anything can cause them to go bad (Bad Ground, or hot wire getting grounded, bad sensors not getting replaced soon enough.

My tranny has the 193,000 miles on it and it's never been changed, never had any work done, except for routine maintenence. I might have a sticky valve(but getting it flushed shour take care of that). I trust my jeep.

maybe he towed a 5000lb trailor the entire time and overheated the transmission and never changed the tranny fluid, you never know the actual life the car has been through or what really went wrong, never know.. it could have been a simple cheap fix to the symptom but he was taken for a ride by the mechanic. or like others said, bad apple, JUST like any other manufacturer has. i know of problems with all manufacturers one end to the other whether it be the disposable korean cars or a mercedes. i know a friends lexus that went through 3 fuel pumps and an ECU within a few months of purchase.. this was a brand new 04.

msrjeep, indeed I think he just got a bad run, and blames it on the jeep. cum on couldn't have been that bad, I will tell u one thing I have only had my jeep (94 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L) for 6 months. it has 193,??? miles on it, and it still runs great. I am not considering getting another vehicle if it's not a Jeep. as long as u do the routine maintenence u shouldn't have any big problems. just keep up on the miantenence thats why it is required not to empty ur pocket on lil thing, but to make sure u don't empty the bank on a bigger thing.
