when asking questons about vehicle it is helpful to know exactly what vehicle you are inquiring about....side step chevy 5.3 is not a description..

Re: what differential does my truck have?

You can have dealer decode the VIN no.
Sometimes the rear end has a ID tag on it.
Or RPO code will tell you.
2 W or 4W drive?
Why are you wanting a limited slip or other gears?
You may alredy have a anti/lock limited slip.
You never know untill you look and check it.

I would pull the inspection plate and have a look and see.
it may have one that is not working.
And with inspection plate off you can read out the gear ratio and rear end info from ring gear.
What type of drag racing.
1/8 - 1/4 car or truck racing/draging or so on?
Why make a dragger out of a heavey pickup?
If you set it up for drag racing it will be will be no good to drive on the highway.

Here is a good web site for rear ends parts and repair info.http://www.differentials.com/install.html

Good Luck

Re: what differential does my truck have?

Make sure you put in the additive in first before the gear lube and you can get it at any parts store. Some people skip this step.Make sure you call tech support from the manufacturer too,Most will say do not use synthetic gear lube including detroit lockers.Synthetic gear lube will screw up detroit lockers.

if when you spin your rear tires only one wheel burns out you have the one wheel drive differential this uses 80-90wt ...gear oil...no additive..

the limited slip differential is in my opion not a good choice for a truck...this is subject to early failure because of it's design, and offers a limited amount of traction when needed...

the locking differential is the best of all GM differentials..this provides a locked traction to both rear wheels but only when needed does it lock....this is the differential that I have in my truck and it's far superior to the limited diif...

use your vin to ensure that this differential change is possible...my locking diff uses 75-90wt synthetic gear oil....this is labeled at diff fill hole as the correct oil ..

Re: what differential does my truck have?

Your dealer can decode your vin no and find out.
You can decode your rpo code.
Rear ends gears and rear ends sometimes get switched and changed so.
So the only way for sure is to pull the inspection plate and have a look and see.
Change the oil in and inspect it at the same time.
You have not told us what drag racing you want to do.
And if you do change it for drag racing it wil not be good for daily driving.

Good luck

Re: what differential does my truck have?

There is one drawback of synthetic gear lube mainly in the older rear ends, too hard on the ring and opinion.I know of 3 rear ends going out due to synthetic gear lube and was told this by my father's friend Rich whom has seen this happen. This guy has a 1983 Monte Carlo with a 9" ford rear and has a detroit locker in it.The place he got the rear end from told him not to use synthetic gear lube screwing the detroit locker up.

the truck is a 2005 1500 silverado not a 4x4 , which appears to have a standard one wheel drive differential....he's going to replace this dif with another type for drag racing .....

synthetic gear lube in a GM limited slip is not a good choice...should only use what is recommended by manufacturer....whatever the device...

your story of the detroit locker is why I don't recommend this part swapping from non stock/oem equiptment....my brother in law has used parts from many manufacturers on older vehicles , where parts are hard to find ......the problem then comes when some repair shop tries to make repairs ...or uses the wrong fluids to top off ....
