My new used 92 Cherokee 4WD will not start in park when the weight of the vehicle is leaning forward (such as on a hill). I'm sure it is most likely the neutral safety switch but I'm not sure what I should do about it if anything. It will start fine if I pop it in neutral plus there is a push button for the starter under the hood. Is anyone familiar with this issue?

This is a very well known problem with the NSS. It can make starting intermittent, reverse lights intermittent, and a few other problems. It isn't too big of a deal to remove it, split the case on it and clean it up and regrease it. Do a google search, or even on here for cherokee nss and you will find all the info you need. I did the job myself, and it wasn't too bad.

You should rebuild the NSS...other issues will eventually surface.

I've had to rebuild the NSS in a Grand Am before so I know it's easy to do. I hope it's not in some hard to reach position under there. Thanks.

There IS a rebuild thread or reference in here.

I found it. I'm actually getting ready to go put it back in the next hour or so. It looks like the old grease had gotten hard in it. I broke a small piece of the plastic housing part off. Instead of gluing it back on I put some Black RTV in it's place. I'm sure it will be fine. I'll post another reply when I'm done.

Thanks for your help. This seems to be a very common problem. Someone will come along with the same problem and may be lucky enough to find these posts.

Here is another link that was very helpful.

I believe one of your links lead to the website I got it from.

My issue is resolved. I tested it in several positions and it started perfectly every time. Reverse lights and all. Thank you to everyone for your replies.:smokin:

It was easier to get on than off. I bet I spent 30 minutes trying to get a zip/cable tie off.:cwm27:
