4wd not disengaging?
Hi All,
I had to pull a log last weekend with my sonoma in 4wd, since my gator wouldn't do the trick.
Now I get a vibration in 2wd and it seems like it isn't completely disengaged from 4wd.
Is that possible?
I don't get the vibration in 4wd.
Thanks,
Smoke

Re: 4wd not disengaging?
I was just going to post a similar question. Since this winter, my wifes 99 jimmy, has the same problem. It is the 4.3L with 4WD. SHe was in 4WD, and then tried to get back out. The system is unresponsive now, no button presses on the dash do anything. The rear differential is definitely locked, as you can feel it when taking corners in parking lots etc. But it is not in actual 4WD, since I can tell by how it handles in the snow and rain.
I am thinking it is an electrical issue, as there was never any problem with the 4WD, it just went in, and then tried to get back out and it is like it never quite fully disengaged and unlocked the diff.
Any advice? I was going to look at the 4WD control box, supposedly behind the passenger side kick panel, and make sure all contacts were clean, and not corroded.

Welcome to AF.
Paul it is best to start your own new post/new thread.
Saves on highjacking.
Also more info needed like year and what transfer case you have.

Smoke welcome to AF on your first post.
More info needed.
Year and what transfer case?
What are you 4W lights doing?
Will it shift from 4W high to 4W low?
Can you hear any shifting from transfer case?
Have you checked fuse?
Jack up right front wheel and see if it will spin by hand.

Re: 4wd not disengaging?
Thanks for the welcome and relies.
I have a 95 GMC Sonoma
4.3CBI with a automatic
I don't know what transfer case it is, is is stock.
The lights are acting normal
It does go into 4 hi and low.
Seems to shift into 2wd
Checked it out on dirt trail, it is shifting from 4wd to 2wd.
I will check the fuse and see if right front spins
It seems like that is the where the vibration is coming from, as much as I can tell...lol
Thanks,
Smoke

Re: 4wd not disengaging?
Well my wireless internet finally came back up.
So, the 4wd fuse is ok and both front wheels turn, but with some resistance, not freely.
I did notice I don't get the vibration in 4wd.
And the vibration is more during acceleration.
Any suggestions of what else I should check or a possible repair?
Thanks,
Smoke

Re: 4wd not disengaging?
Check U joints and carrier bearings an double joints and slip joints.
Also engine and transmission mounts and mounting.
Mudd or dirt on wheels?
Tire balance?
Check tires for a bent wheel or slipped belt.
Jack it up and put blocks/stands under all four corners of front and rear axels and run it threw the gears and check for viberation with tires on and tires off.
Does it change with engine rpm or mph or different gears?
What speed or gear or rpm is it more?
