Pilot Bearing Repair - Shop or home mechanic?

RaeRae1

I wanted to get some opinions. Seems the pilot bearing has gone out on my 1991 Nissan 2.0 SE-R. I have done a clutch replace/repair before but it has been many years but have never tried a pilot bearing replace/repair. The price I was quoted for the entire job was $875 (parts, labor, taxes and shop fees). Do you think it is worth $400-$500 in labor to bring it to a professional shop, or would you try to just do the repair at home?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on the clutch kit - which one to get? It is just a DD so no need for a racing clutch but still want something decent.

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Im not sure on this specific car but usually a pilot bearing is simple if you already know how to replace the clutch. You will save ALOT of money if you doit yourself. The pilot bearing just needs to be pulled out with a puller and slide hammer and the new one gets popped right in. If you need any help along the way im sure theres people around here that will help.

Thanks Alex. I was thinking that as well. On this year you don't have to remove any of the exhaust so it should be fairly easy. I have it up on jackstands and have removed the driver side half shaft. However, I am having difficulty with the passanger side half-shaft. It seems stuck. I have removed the three bolts to the carrier bracket and have tried getting a screwdriver in there but it is being very diffuclt. Not sure if there is a trick I am missing...

Thanks for the post/advice. I will keep that in mind and try really really hard not to just give up, say to H*** with it and take it to a shop :grinyes:.

if you want a slightly grippier clutch than stock, go with whatever performance brand's stage 1 kit. usually it includes a stockish disc with a slightly stiffer pressure plate. holds more power without excessive driveability issues.

jgycustoms has one for $255
jim wolf technology has one
SPEC stage 1 clutch kit $250
exedy stage 1 kit $280 (ebay)
ACT pressure plate $225
fidanza 2.1 clutch kit $300
center force dual friction kit $350
and an OEM nissan kit should run about $275-$300

that took all of 5 minutes
google is your friend.

YYYYEEESS!!! I finally got the passanger half-shaft out! Yes, I did have to use a hammer - and a screwdriver (broke one as well... erk) and my big ass prybar to pry it back and forth. It was slightly rusted where it is held on by the carrier bracket. It was not held at all by the splines at the diff so all is good, although this is making for one VERY SLOW clutch fix...... Perhaps I can get it completed this weekend.... barring any further stubborn parts (yeah, I know, good luck with that).

Thanks for the advice slideways - I had another forum (a local Nissan one in fact that is turning out to be a fantastic resource) and they have led me to a specific Exedy stage 1 kit. I think that should do fine for this car.

And - just on a side note - yes google is my friend, but not a knowledgable friend that can direct me or give me a retort on what has worked or what sucks. That is why I love the forums - people who have "been there, done that" with great knowledge and advice.

Thanks again all!

see you laughed but i was right..... lol

 More right than you may know... I think I used your line about 5 times during the repair - made me seriously laugh out loud.. My husband thought I had lost my mind, sitting under the car, pounding the crap out of the thing, and laughing hysterically....

Maybe I should see a therapist?

if you cant laugh while pounding something with a hammer you shouldnt be under there in the first place

indeed. well i havent actually used any of said clutches but they all have good reputations and i know people who have used the JGY and JWT ones. so thats where my advice is coming from.

Ok - time for me to beg help/opinions/suggestions again.

I finally got the tranny out this weekend (yeah, I know, forever project but I am working on limited spare time). As it turns out, it was not the pilot bearing but one of the springs on the clutch disc had come out and was rattling around. I knew it sounded odd:eek7:. I am still going to replaced everything while I am in there.

Anyhoo - as I have found out, it is typical for this transmission to have a 5th gear pop-out, and mine is no exception. Since I have the transmission out, I am thinking of repairing the synchros on it as well.

Here is my dilema. I have never even ventured into that area of the transmission. How difficult do you think this repair is? And, do you think a novice can do it?

Thanks again - in advance for all the info and help! Everyone on here has been fantastic help. Don't know what I would do without this forum.

there is a good chance youll need a press to get the gears off of the input shaft to be able to change the synchros, a hammer is not welcome on the inside of the tranny.... manual transmissions are not that difficult once you actually see what youre dealing with, so if you do feel like tackling it be sure to send me a message so i can help you know what to expect

edit: it looks like the FSM calls for a gear/pulley puller to remove the gears, you may be able to go this route if you dont have a press..... if you pull this one off i think you win a prize or something, id be interested to hear how it comes out

and the parts for the 5th gear popout repair can be found as a preassembled OEM kit from courtesyparts.com

which parts are supposed to be replaced? just the synchros or to you need the hubs and detents as well?

Prize? What kind of prize? lol - sooooo do they have a "chicken" smiley? cause I think I am going to chicken out.

I have been doing some searching, and asking around. The consensus seems to be to get a different tranny and swap it out.

I did look at the kit on courtesy Parts - it seems to be a good site, and gives good detail on what parts need to be replaced. Here is the link in case you wanted to check it out Nismo:

I'll let ya know what I do. Ugh - internet is fantastic, but can be bad in the aspect of too many ideas/choices.... *pulls out a chunk of hair*.

if you already have the tranny out i wouldnt be scared of it, you may be able to get away without replacing the actual input gear if the small teeth on it are in good shape, the synchro and hub is cake after that

Wow - you have more faith in me than I do. I am going to try it. I was pricing used trannys (of which I really could not find many) and the cost seemed to be around 600 and up, so a rebuild I think it will be. *Although, I would love to put a spec V 6 speed in... not gonna happen on my budget. *

I think I should replace the input gear though, according to a pretty thorough link I was able to find, those are the teeth that can cause issue and at this mileage I am thinking it will almost definitely need replacement. dunno for sure, only know when I *cough, hold breath* start tearing into it.

I'll let you know what I find and what happens. Not positive it will be this weekend. Although I really need my DD I am also expecting my new front end parts for my Cougar and well, the weather is gorgeous and I really really want to get the convertible finished so I can take her out for some cruisin! ** dilemas... dilemas..**

Just wanted to give an update.

I have completed the transmission. I did have a local transmission mechanic that came to the house and helped me a little (thank God because he knew tricks that saved a ton of time).

I have to tell ya how he put the transmission back into the car. He slid the tranny under the car, stood beside it, reached through the engine compartment and just lifted it, one handed, into place. Pretty neat little trick to watch.

Anyhow, thanks for the input and help. Everything is running GREAT and the clutch feels amazing. I do think I have to adjust the clutch cable some though; I keep almost stalling it and I chirp it in second.

Alright, you asked for it. Here is a pic of my sweet Sentra and the transmission fix.

Didn't get the greatest pics of the actual 5th gear "houses" that were worn down. The fix is still working great, although I think I may have a very small leak somewhere now!! :banghead:
