3800 SII engine hose

Ok I have a Elbow hose coming out the block i do not know what it is for or how to fix the issue but its gushing all my coolent out so car is undrive able.

Its on a 98 intrigue but has the 3800 SII in it, so thought I would ask the question here since every 3800 model has it. I couldnt find a good pic of it online so I found one of the SIII supercharged with the same elbow I circled where the hose goes in on the pic.

Any help on fixing this would be greatly aperciated. The elbow comes out the block above the Water pump and then goes into something I guess its for the Heater. I dont know what its for how to fix it anything. Thanks in advance.

If I broke any guidlines or posted in the wrong forum i do apologize I am just trying to get this figured out.

There are two coolant elbows, both of which are easy to replace. Get them from the dealership, I think less than 20 bucks for the set.

Remove the belts and alternator, then there are three 15mm bolts i believe holding the tensioner assembly to the block. From there these coolant elbows just pop out. Insert the new ones and your good to go.

Re: 3800 SII engine hose

Thanks for the fast reply. Is there any O-rings or anything from looking at the elbow nothing is wrong with it. The car over heated(Dont know why) when we finnally got into the hood we saw there was a leak so we flushed it to see where and it started barly squirting out there(Started to over heat again probably losing to much coolant)

We checked the hose it had a snug fit started the car again it didnt do anything no leak so we let it sit for awhile while we thought about why it over heated. Started the car again this time it was gushing out both sides of the hose. just want to make sure replacing the elbow will put it in there snug where it wont gush out again and fix the issue.

If you replace the elbow it will come with new o-rings.

Re: 3800 SII engine hose

Tblake (Tim) is correct. The GM elbows come with the o-rings, and the elbow is most likely the cause of your leak. Over time, the OEM elbows develop hairline cracks that won't be visible or leak until heated and under pressure. Don't bother with the Motormite/Help versions of these elbows, as they are prone to leaking at the mold seams and not much if any cheaper than the dealer ones. Lubricate the new o-rings with fresh coolant prior to installing to make the job easier.
