does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

this is gonna be a real long post...but its got my head spinning

i was driving up to Michigan on saturday to go to my sisters grad party, and i brought the GT

i started going down the freeway, and like 30 miles down the freeway the SRS light starts blinking, and the DIC starts "flashing" sort of like its going to turn off. so i figure not a big deal, i'll just check the fuses and w/e when i get to my destination.

then i set the cruise control, and everytime i would hit the brakes, the CD player would turn off and just go to the radio. (i have the 10 disc changer option, so its in the trunk) so then I'm like...WTF??

so i just keep driving, i was like w/e i dont know what's going on. then i get to a little town and hit this big fu*king pot hole in the middle of the road, and ALL the lights on the dash come on. then i decided to stop for a restroom break real quick and check it out.

so i go to the store, shut the car off and go inside. i come back out and put the key in the ignition, turn it....and there is NOTHING. no power or anything. not even the door dingy thing, or interior lights. so i go to turn the key back and it wont go all they way back! so the key is now stuck in the ignition. so I'm sitting there thinking what the H am i going to do? so i sit there for like 30 mins and keep trying it. then i used the unlock button to put the car in nuetral. i then try it...and it starts. so i shut it off, and try it again...then it wouldnt start! not even in nuetral. so i just sit there for another 30 mins, try it again and get it started. then i was like F it...if it'll stay running i just wont shut it off till i get to where im going.

then i get to my parents house...shut the car off and go to show my dad what it was doing...now it wont do it anymore!! it starts EVERY time! i was just wondering if maybe you guys know what it could have been? I am clueless

thanks,
-jerad

Re: does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

I'd be looking at bad grounds at the battery, chassis or engine.

Didnt you just have the transmission rebuilt?

Maybe the P/N safety switch is misaligned...

Re: does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

to put another detail in there that i forgot...when i finally got the car started, the brakes were REALLY sloshy for a while, kind of like i had just did a brake job on it, AND the radio and everything totally reset. the time was reset, and all the radio stations that i had preset were no longer there. maybe i should check the ground on the battery now that i think about it. but would that cause an issue with the brakes too??

and why would it act all weird driving down the road? if a ground was bad, wouldnt the car just totally shut off?

All sorts of werid things can happen due to a bad ground. Check all your battery connections while your at it.

Sometimes strange issues like this are caused by a bad ignition switch also.

that was my first guess...but I'll try the simple things first. I'll just check the battery connections and see if they're loose. like i said...it's not doing it anymore, so its kinda hard to see what caused it

Also check the battery cables for corrosion. The positive cable on my car was corroded, I stopped at the store went back out the car totally dead. Cleaned the cables and have had no more problems.

Re: does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

I'm leaning toward a bad ignition switch/harness assembly. The contacts get weak with age and start to arc, which in turn sets off all sorts of weird electrical gremlins. The spongy brakes were most likely caused by an intermittent/weak electrical signal to the EBCM (again caused by the IGN switch), causing the valves/solenoids to hang up.

Re: does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

Rich, brings up a good point that I have over looked, The spongy brakes. It really make more sense having the ignition switch starting to fail. I have been using deoxit from craig labs on mine. So far I have not had any problems with my ignition switch.

Re: does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

yeah, when it happened i was beating on the bottom of the steering column thinking that maybe it would knock some sense into the harness...didnt do any good haha

but the ignition harness was my first impression, i know the GP's are known for them...and they can cause some real weird things to happen. I'm just gonna wait and see if the car acts up...if it does again, that'll be the first thing i change

Re: does anyone wanna touch this one?? haha

well...it happened again last night. now the car will not start. it is sitting in my GF's driveway with a tarp over the door because i couldnt even get the window to go up.

how hard is the harness to change? i have no tools here at my house in WI. so if i run to like wal mart or something and get a little tool kit will i be able to change it in her driveway?

now its really weird...it almost seems like a dead battery or something. I'm going to try and take a video of the issue today on my cell phone. because it is really hard to explain what is going on. i just really think its the ignition harness...

well...figured it out. wasnt the harness. i pulled both terminals off the battery, and something told me to peel back the heat/weather strip on the battery cables. well...underneath the wire cover on the positive battery terminal...the cable was all coroded and such. i replaced the positive battery cable from the battery to the starter and it works like a charm.

idk how in the H the whole cable was so corroded. i think it had something to do with when the remote started was installed...whoever did it didnt know what they are doing. all fixed now though...whew

When in doubt blame it on the guy that installed it.
