Re: Thinking about buying an Impala....
I get between 20 and 30 MPG depending on type of driving. My Impala with the 3.8L engine has been ver good to me. I have a 2003 with 163k miles on it with no major problems.

Absolutely not true, I have 2002 Impala with almost 150.000 miles and no major problems at all.
Gas Mileage http://www.fueleconomy.gov/Feg/noframes/17776.shtml
If you want reliable vehicle, with great gas mileage, considering that you want to drive V6, this car is for you.
After all Police and Taxi drivers would not have Impala's if they have major problems like this person is telling you about.
Cheers,

Re: Thinking about buying an Impala....
I have a 2003 IMPALA and LOVE it.... nice clean...fast takeoff power...and excellent highway power and speed...
I recently had to have my engine REBUILT, but this was not due to anymechanicaly breakdowns..but instead...due to a sorry OIL CHANGE SHOP not replacing my DRAIN PLUG...and so..I ran it with LOW to NO oil...and blew a crankshaft.
But ran GREAT before this issue with 120K miles......and AFTER rebuild...oh man....NIcccccceeeee..

Re: Thinking about buying an Impala....
My 2000 3.8 Impala gets 23-25 mpg, in 30% town/70% highway driving. This is a measured mpg, not from the trip computer. I have had as high as 31 mpg, but that was all highway, 70mph on cruise.
i've got 90K miles, and have had no major problems. As with any car, there are bad ones out there, and ones that haven't been maintained. I've probably spent $200 or less in unscheduled maintenance on the 3 years I've had the car, but I do most of the work myself, with the help of many on this and other forums.

I get 28 on the freeway, wanna buy mine? I have 120,000 miles but never had to replace anything on this car. I'll sell it for 7,500. that 2002 impala LS fully loaded, and has the sport apperance package with the cool tail light covers and paited moldings?

Re: Thinking about buying an Impala....
I've got an '02 Impala with around 107k miles on it now (bought new in '02). Recently replaced the intake manifold gaskets myself plus a whole slew of other stuff that had to be removed anyway (or made sense to replace) for $400, but other than that I've only replaced the battery and water pump ($35 and 30 mins of my labor).
I view my Impala as basically a good car. It just had the one major intake gasket issue (like they all do). GM should've fixed the problem at no charge to me, but then again I could've paid $10,000 more for a similarly-equipped Accord and MAYBE had no trouble. After I replaced my intake gaskets, I popped the hood on a neighbor's 2000 Impala to make sure I had not mixed up the plastic spark plug wire holders on the valve covers. The odometer on this woman's car had 230K miles on it (and she had bought the car used)!!! She said she had never had any problems with the car (although it appeared she was headed for an intake gasket job to me).
So, there are plenty of miles to be driven in these cars. They're not perfect, but they're much less expensive than their Japanese equivalents and they're very reliable.

Re: Thinking about buying an Impala....
I just picked up my brand new 08 Impala GT yesterday. This morning my wife & I car pooled to work. After dropping her at the comuter station, I reset the mileage and traveled a constant 10-12 miles stretch of I-95 at a constant 60 mph with no braking and minimum accerlation. Basically I drove my car like a Toyota driver.
I averaged 38.5 mpg on the digital info center. I am sure the number would be higher if the road doesn't have the 3 small hills. On the flip side, if I drove the car like I always drove my Grand Prix GT, I am fully expected to see the mileage to go down to low 20s.

Re: Thinking about buying an Impala....
I would definitely recommend buying an Impala. I have a 2002 fully loaded LS with over 270,000 miles on it and it's still running strong. I have no overdrive, so that hurts the mpg's a little on the highway but I still get a consistent 22-24mpgs without overdrive. I think it's a great car and I will definitely buy one again once this one quits on me.
