Has anyone rebuild a power steering pump on a '94? just wondering, i tried the search and it didn't come up with anything. I'll have my first shot at it tomorrow. if anyone likes i can take some pics and post my progress if your interested.

Most people just replace the PS pump with a rebuilt unit. If you intend to dissect the pump and replace all the internal parts, I am sure, many folks here would like to see the pics & procedure.

yeah, its leaking and the rebuild kit is $13 so i figured what the hell.

an update- buy a power steering pulley removal tool! Now I'm down one p/s pulley but I'll have some (crappy) pictures up soon. Does anyone have a line to one for cheap? From what I've seen the pulley don't interchange much from year to year but does anyone else have any input?

I am sorry; I forgot to mention that the “pulley puller” would be the first thing you would need. Some other specialized tools may be needed for bearing and seal replacement. Rebuilding a PS pump is not for the novice mechanic! You might be able to find a PS pump with the pulley at your local JY. Good Luck!

OK so after a few weeks and some goofin' around shes all done.
It was actually quite an easy process slowed down by all the shmegma of a 14 year old car. bear with me as i set this up, this is my first pictoral forum post.

NOTE- wear safety glasses. theres 5 or 6 clips on these bad boys and they FLY. seriously though i almost lost most of them, they come off in a hurry.

view of the back (its dark i know, but you'll see them)and location of the clips. pry the clips off with whatever you can manage. i used a screwdriver, punch and hammer. mwuaha

use a punch (or nail in my case) and push our the clip holding on the backer plate. yes, its already removed in the picture. you may have to apply pressure to the backer to remove the clip.

backer plate, clips, and pump. I had to tap the pump side of the shaft with a brass hammer to get it all to come out. the backer plate contains a piece of the pump that has a large o-ring inside it. the smaller clip is off of the end of the pump shaft, which is a pain in the a$$ to remove and can be ruined. it will also more than likely go flying across the room once its dislodged.

pump assembly in housing. note location of pins. use a paint marker or something to locate everything ... i never thought of it, I'm not sure if its essential in this model, but i read in another models forum that if you put it in backwards power steering will work AGAINST you. my pump had some pretty good ghost imprints from wear so it was kinda hard to mess up.

Take note of all the veins, they should be checked for wear and are not attached to anything, AKA they will fall out and be a paint in the a$$. If i had a better camera you could have seen the wear on the inner pump body, although the veins and out rotor looked in good shape. there had definitely been a few pieces of softer metal through her.

finished product. assembly is reverse of removal. things i would have done differently: painted things to look nice, used a paint pen to mark rotors etc., gotten the proper tool to remove the pump pulley. the pulleys are actually hard to come by, dealer only item (or junkyard in my case).

the moaning is almost completely gone (the pump is pretty worn) and steering is a touch better.
