67 Mustang „Eleanor“ Transkit by Scale Production - Kit review

I just got an issue of the transkit, which is based on the famous Mustang in the film „Gone in 60 seconds“.

As there are alredy some comments about the transkit - http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=904285 - I thought a kit review might be interesting

Here are the parts coming in the transkit, which is based on a AMT 67 Shelby Mustang Fastback-kit.

The body:

One more time Scaleproduction shows, that it is possible, to produce resin parts in a very clean way ( the resin parts you see come directly out of the box, I did no cleaning !!)
The body is crisp, no bubbles or holes, not even on the underside. All panel lines are engraved, wheelwells, side skirts with opening for the exhaust, air intakes behind the doors, rear wing and front fender are modified to look like the 1:1 car. Hood looks great with ist powerdome.

Just on the AMT kit the wipers come with the body, I will think of sanding them away and replace them with separate parts.

The wheels

Each wheel comes in three parts:
- the vinyl tire in a convincing tread
- the inner resin part with superb engraved five „V-spokes“
- an engraved alu-ring for the front of the wheel

White metal parts

To provide the engine of the model with (optical) power, there is an air filter and the cylinder heads in Cobra-design in the transkit, very fine casting, you can read „Cobra“ on the parts. I am thinking of just polishing them out.

Gas filler cap is a little piece of art. It is surrounded by 8 screws !!

The mirrors come as metal parts, too

Etched parts

These are very fine and crisp.
They provide the model with two grills for the font, brakes, knock-offs for the wheels, emblems (on which you glue the GT 500 and shelby-snake decals), hood fasteners, very fine surrounding for the exhaust in the side skirt, licence plate and seat belt fastener

Futher you find decals for the emblems, the side stripes, the RPM-Meter, licenceplate, the lights, an some fabric for the seat belts in the box.

To me, the transkit is great. For 69 Euro I get f.e. a body, I can use without lots of cleaning (I just remember a WRC transkit body with resin rods at the windows –looking like jail- that must be removed)

For those, who like film cars: look on http://www.scaleproduction.de/imagesresin/Transkit.jpg , there is a transkit for the GMC truck of the „Fall Guy“ on its way !!!

Thank you for the review!!! That kit does indeed look terrific!!! The brakes look like something revell ag would concoct, but I guess it works out with those wheels, and being able to have the car sit lower without really modding the suspension. Odd how they cast the doorhandles in resin, and not chromed, or just made them in the same metal as the other beautiful parts.

Sweet thanks for sharing, how come you always get their new kits? Could i join that list?

I gotta say that Scale production produces the cleanest resin. My VW golf rally transkit looks flawless with no air bubbles, hardly do i get to say that. With what resin kits cost, they should all be this quality. Enough reviews, get this beast built. Progress Please!!!

Thanks again for sharing, don't stop showing us reviews of scale production stuff.

yes i have to agree, the resin body is really 'clean' & crisp. i wonder how's the thickness overall, just in case you wanna open up the inlets etc...?

i believe this is pressured cast...so smooth that i can only find resin parts belonging to those 1/48 aircraft!

while i'm a 100% avid 1/24 ferrari fan, i sort of lean slightly to this kit now...after seeing the review here! hehe...one last thing, what scale is this!?

cheers!

Hi,

thanks for the comments.

Here are 2 photos of the painted body of the German modeler mate, who did the master for the body:

Oh guys,

before I forget:

Randall "Memphis" Raines (aka as Nicolas Cage in real life), the main character in "Gone in 60 Seconds", is also waiting, that the model is finished ;-)

Great review Micha and VERY tempting!

I'd also like to ask if the AMT version is the ONLY base kit that will fit the T/k?

Thanks, Steve.

As the transkit is built up on the kit I posted (which is a reissue), it fits best here.

if anyone does have that gt-350 kit, we can compare it with the regular mustang gt kit and see if they are similar. I can happily put the pictures of gt kit.

Hi brady_381need72c10,

just think back some years: I could read, that AMT or Revell USA kits were sold in Wallmart in US for about 7-8 US$, in Germany we paid 19 - 24 Euro for the same kits :banghead: .

When I order a kits from US or Japan, postage is around 30 - 40 Euro, so I think, modelling in Germany isn´t cheap :dunno: .

Of course, people alway can save money by doing a model themselves, without a transkit, just like Risko did here in the AF.

WTF? Scratching doesn`t really cost anything. All you need is some styrene, putty, good hand-eye co-ordination and plenty of patience. Even if you have to buy all the supplies it'll only cost you a fraction of what the kit costs. Admittedly that does not include the time you need to scratch build this lady :headshake

Oh.... talking about time. Do you have any idea how much time one needs to master a kit like that? If all the aftermarket manufacturers would calculate the price of their kits based on the time spent on developing it, nobody would be able to afford them!

Like I said before: exchange rates are always unfortunate for some people and must not be used to complain about "high" prices of such kits. To put it into perspective: a regular Revell (Germany) kit like the Audi R8 costs about 17-19EUR in Germany (incl. VAT / excl. shipping). The transkit runs at 69EUR (incl. VAT / excl. shipping). Not really that expensive for a high quality, limited production kit from a small manufacturer, is it? The pictures sportracer02 posted show exactly what you get.

If you like the subject and don't have the time or skills to scratch it: bite the bullet and fork out the money (approx. 1/3 of it to the German mail services).

Sorry, I didn't mean to attack or offend you personally. Just had to vent my frustration about all the people who never consider that about 1/3 of the purchase price is shipping and the rest is due to exchange rate misfortunes.

Cheers and happy modeling
SEB

PS: don't take it too seriously. Sniff glue'n'paint and enjoy the time :lol2::lol: :lol2:  :lol2:  :lol2:

Absolutely!!!! :grinyes:

I just received this kit, and it is one of the best transkits I have seen! The casting is flawless and everything to build an accurate Eleanor is included in the box.

I also thought this kit was a little too expensive, but after checking it personally, I think it is a great buy!
