Question Steering Problem Ranger

I have a 93 ranger 4x4 170 k miles. When I make right hand turns the steering wheel does not caster back correctly. I also hear a clunk from the front end. I thinking this may be the tie rod ends. How can I check this or is their something else it coul be?

Thanks

Re: Steering Problem Ranger

Grab the tie rod ends and try to move them if they move easily , have play, or feel rough then they are shot. They should twist smothly and they should require some effort to move, and while you're down there you might as well grease everything.

Re: Steering Problem Ranger

If you replace any front end parts it will have to be aligned unless you want to buy new tires. Take it to a qualified shop and have them inspect the front end before they align it. They will tell you what it needs and you can then go back home and to the work yourself. I would never try to align a front end that needed work. I always gave a FREE estimate about what needed to be done and the cost. Save yourself a lot of head banging and take it to somebody qualified to make the decisions about what needs to be done.
