cpu reprogramming

I am working on a project to run a 96 ford ranger on an alternative fuel (lengthy description so i will leave it at that for now), i am fairly certain that the sensors will send angry messages to the onboard computer and the vehicle wont run well if at all. i have been reading about some diagnostic programs and some stuff on preset chips, but i have yet to really see what i am looking for.

I had figured that there would be some program that i could run on a laptop with a reasonable interface that would allow me to adjust settings such as spark timeing and to tell the engine that everything was ok despite what the sensors were telling it.

the two big names that i have come accross are jet and autotap. has anyone know any knowledge of these or other programs that might be helpful? a module with specific "performance" settings will not be helpful to me, i need to be able to adjust settings in an experimental way.
