I have not heard a belt tensioner tap or tick... The pulley can make a grinding sound, as with the power steering pump too.

Lifters are a problem area, which in turn causes the valves not to open properly and it will cause other noise.

My GA GT(3.4) is getting ready to be pulled apart because it has a couple lifters ticking.
Realy sucks , cause I just had it apart not long ago replacing the head/LIM gaskets.

Re: Tapping Noise

To find out what part it is, use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope (or buy an automotive stethoscope ~$20), just put the handle to your ear and probe various parts of the engine until you find what's loudest. Just pay attention to moving things like the belt or fan(s), I thought I was going to lose my hearing when I got my stethoscope into a metal fan blade.

I have heard a tensioner make a tick/tap sound. If it starts to twist sideways (pulling outward at the pivot point) it can move back and forth and make noise when it hits.

So I go to this get-together at a friends house, not remembering it's a few days before Halloween. I see a bunch of dirty looking strangers. Then I see a guy that was clearly wearing a Halloween costume and I make the connection, and say "Oh yeah, Halloween... y'all goin' as a group of bums?". Turns out they weren't wearing costumes.
