I need to install a new pump (1999 Winnie) and had a couple of questions...

1. Any magic installing the new teflon ring on the high pressure side tube?
2. Has anyone had experience with a autozone tool that will take off and install the pulley?
3. Is it worth taking off the cowl for access?
4. Any other advice?

1) Soak the ring in a hot cup of water and then stretch slightly over a tapered bar like a "Lady Foot Prybar" or some other tapered, round tool.
2) Sometimes there are 2 seperate tools for removal and install, so make sure that has both. The pulley takes some time and frustration, but you will get it.
3) Removing the cowl is optional. I seen others do it, but I never do.
4) After the pump is changed, inspect and replace the belt if needed. Purging the system from air takes time and patience. Fill the fluid 1/2 way to the top and have a bottle ready. Start it up and get ready to add fluid. Don't let the sound of the pump scare you, because it will cry for a moment. After the fluid seems full, leave the cap off and slowy turn the wheels (while running) from lock to lock. Sometimes, you have to drive it around town to get all the air out.

In the cowl above the pump on my winnie there seems to be some kind of black wedge shaped duct-like thing that goes down into the firewall. Do you know if this duct comes off when you take the cowl off? (otherwise I do not see how taking off the cowl would give me any additional room to get at the pump)

It's some sort of gutter to channel water from the cawl into the ground and off the engine.
It does comes off... just twist and pull. It snaps back on easy too!
