i was on the freeway, 80mph. heard a bearing start to get loud. and a few mins later the timing belt broke.

so is the 1.5 an interference or non?

should i fix it or pull the head?

thankyou
dario

Yes it is an interferance engine. At 80 mph there is probably alot of damage to the head. and maybe the pistons.

Do a compression check after changing the belt and hope to god its ok across the board, if it isnt then youve got problems. A leakdown will tell you where to start, or you can just pull the head and look for yourself after the compression check.

I'm with Frodo. replace the belt and run a compression check. I have seen them survive 80 mph snaps before.

on the other hand....every valve in your poor little d15b might be bent... but i too have seen them survive

hey guys i got a timing belt on it, and it did start., i'm curious if i did get the timing belt off a 1-2 teeth. i got it running and its running rough at idle, a tad bit of gas and its ultra smooth untill about 3-3500 rpm, then it bogs out and acts like it hits the rev limiter.

how critical is it for me to let the engine run with out touching the gas. and how long. i've heard that hondas need to run for 10-15mins before touching them. because my battery was disconnected for 2days is that true? am i full of crap?

thank you for all your input. my mom gave me this car last year, i learned to drive stick with it about 13 years ago so i'd like to keep it going, she also told me she had the timing belt break on the freeway before.

so i'm not sure if i have the valve to crank timing correct. i had the key way on my crank pointing up, then i rotated it backwards 3 teeth, the up was up on the cam, and the - - marks were parallel with the head. i did a compression test and had about 180lbs to 200 in all cylinders.

anything else i should do? oh timing belt tensioner locked up, half the bearings are gone, cause noted!!

Not sure where timing marks are on this engine.

Comp. of 180 to 200 seems out of place unless it is a diesel. Should be more like 115 to 130.

No 180 is good. On a fresh engine you could see higher than 200.

so if my compression is good then could it be the cam/crank timing that makes my motor run like crap?

thanks guys

Yeah it could be. Remember when you move the cam, you have to retime the distributor.

is that because of a crank sensor? i didnt remove the dist from the cam. if i'm wrong, i'm just curious as to why i'd have to adjust the ignition timing.

thanks for your help

Because if you have the cam turned..the distributor gets turned as well.

Sounds like you have a tooth off. Its what my first race car did several times because I had no timing marks at all on that engine. There should be a timing mark on your crank pulley and on part of the timing cover that goes behind it. If you don't have the cover behind it, there is a tiny arrow by your oil pump that marks TDC. You have your timing marks right on the cam...I had problems on mine because the D16Z6 uses a different timing mark on the cam rather than the edge of the head.

For realz? My y8 was so dead simple..shockingly simple actually. Thought itd be harder. Line up notches on cam gear, make sure "up" is up. and align lower timing belt pulley groove with block groove. The crank pulley is keyed so theres no need to worry about that.

Keyed or not, without a timing mark to go off of, you can still get it off. Granted the crank pulley is easier to line up, but still possible to mess it up. On the Z6 cam pulley, there are 3 marks: 2 of them you use for the 1.5s, line them up with the edge of the head, the 3rd one is supposed to line up with a timing mark on the back timing cover. Now when you have absolutely no timing covers, making sure the timing is correct can be tricky. It was always a trial and error thing for me. Now the motor I am running now has all the timing marks its supposed to, but I haven't had to change the belt on it yet.
