Hey guys,

I hear a lot of people talk highly about Seafoam, but I've heard that it's bad for certain cars. I take it that it's probably safe for a 4th gen Firebird, though?

Also, where all in the car should I put it? I know to put it in the engine oil and the gas tank, but anywhere else? I've heard people say to suck some up through the brake booster line, but I have no idea where that is.

I used Sea Foam in gas several times, I don't think it helped a bit.
I also tried the brake booster method, also with no luck.
It could just be me, but I don't think much of it to begin with...

I wouldn't put it in the oil. Put it in the gas tank and pull a vaccum line off the front (throttle body, etc) and let it suck up some into the line. This will clean out the throttle body and upper intake. The brake booster line is usually located about the middle or rear end of the intake manifold and goes to the big round black thing on the driver side mounted to the fire wall (brake booster).
If you want to clean out the crank case, add a qt of type F auto trans fluid to the oil and run the engine for 15 minutes or so. Then drain it all out and change the oil filter and refill with oil. The type F trans fluid is high detergent fluid that will dissolve any sludge in the engine and let it drain out with the oil.

SeaFoam is an excellent product when used for what it's intended. I recall one Ford Escort where I poured it in the fuel and while it was still running, the bad injector cleared right up. Another that I've used with actual results (most are snake oil) is Berryman's B-12. If the SeaFoam didn't "cure" your problem, it was either not an injector OR it was just TOO clogged.

If the engine is high mileage and not been maintained properly, it is a BIG mistake to pour transmission fluid or any other "high detergent" agent into it. It can and will break big chunks of goo loose and can clog oil-return passages, starving the bottom end. Just be careful!

My advice is forget seafoam. Just run good gas and keep your fluids changed at regular intervals.

When we tore down my engine, it looked very good with 126k miles on it and being boosted for the last 74k miles. Granted I drove a lot of highway miles but I wasn't exactly nice to it. LS1 on 9# of boost + other mods made one fun ride. :grinyes:

I didn't do anything crazy, I used Mobil 1 motor oil (you can use whatever oil you want. Walmarts regular oil has actually done quite well in tests) and transmission fluid(ATF synthetic in my 6 speed). I didn't buy crappy gas from Sheetz or places I know that their gas isn't very good because of their tanks and/or fuel supply system. I stuck with Sunoco(on the east coast) and Exxon, Shell, 76 or Chevron where Sunoco wasn't around. I think once I ran a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner through it.

My point is, just don't get crazy with bad gas station and keep your fluids changed at good intervals. You'll be fine. :smokin:

Maybe we're talking apples and oranges here. Under no circumstances would I use the SeaFoam I know about in anything but fuel. Adding it to the oil would simply dilute the oil and "wash out" the bearings (bad). The stuff I'm refering to is an additive for fuel systems ONLY. And it DOES work!

I agree with just using good gas. Run Top Tier Gas and many problems are avoided, such as carbon build up and dirty fuel system.http://toptiergas.com/

i've used sea foam a lot in the intake to clean out the gunk built up in the intake, combustion chambers and heads. i put it n and shut it off and let sit for a few mins. when u crank it back up, tons of smoke" bad gunk" and the cars always run smoother.
