Exclamation having issues with my buick..

Greetings all,
I've recently come into ownership of an 89 Lasabre and I'm having some issues. I'm posting this text from the buick forums. Please let me know if anyone knows what this is specifically.. Thanks

pasted text---
Greetings all.
I just recently acquired an 89 Buick Lasbre custom with a 3.8 and I'm having some issues. It has 193K on it but, starts just fine and runs (for some time) fine. The major issue I'm having is that once I've been driving for a while, she just shuts down all together. This could be while driving or at a stop light. Once I get er started back, I can rev er up and she'll backfire like crazy and the service engine soon light comes on as well as running rough. She drives fine after this but, the engine light stays on and has no pick up. It's kind of like it's out of time. At any rate, if anyone could help out with this, I would be grateful. I'm also having transmission slippage but, I'll get that fixed in due time as it's not real bad at this point. Thanks in adviance. Once I've restared, sometimes, the service engine soon light will go off after I shut the car off completey.

Re: having issues with my buick..

Welcome Aboard!

The best indication of the problem(s) might be had if you scan the ECM for stored error codes. It could be any number of things, but the description seems eerily similar to one I had which had a failing ICM.

Re: having issues with my buick..

Thanks bowtie.
Your the second one to mention an ICM so, I think that's probably a good starting point. Now all I have to do is get one. One of the guys on the buick forum said that he's got a used one and he'll sell it to me for cheap so, maybe I'll take him up on that offer and hope that that's the problem.

Re: having issues with my buick..

Pull the error codes first. It's easy to do with only a paper clip and the ignition key.
