MPG question
I am posting for my brother.
This past fall he bought a used 2005 RS 2,5 from a used car dealer. I do not know his exact mileage but it is somewhere around 30,000 miles.
He gets only 22 mpg. Is it normal?
I just searched this forum for an hour but nobody talks about MPG here. The only suggestion I found was to use higher octaine. Is it right?
Sam

Re: MPG question
I get 21- 22 mpg in my 2000 RS if I'm just driving around town (very similar motors). My car's got 100k+ miles, and I'm pretty heavy on the gas, but that always seems low to me...
Only on long-haul interstate trips can I up it to around 26 mpg. I think my highest ever was 28.
Octane rating should have no effect on MPG. You'd just be paying more.

Re: MPG question
Thanks, Jay.
I too think this is quite low. Some people on ultumatesubaru.org reported that kind of mileage, but that was the lowest one.

Re: MPG question
On my 2.5RS's I used to get up around 30mpg on the interstate.
I get around 32 in the Legacy with cruise control set.
22mpg is low, even for a WRX it would be low.

Re: MPG question
The SOHC 2.5 with longer gears gets around 30 mpg on the highway, but with the shorter gears of a 2.5 RS, I wouldn't be surprised at 26-28 mpg.

Re: MPG question
I have a 95 Impreza L.
I checked consumer reports and it gets 28/22 MPG highway/city.
If I get a better intake system I'll hopefully get about 30.
If I had a manual, it would get 4+mpg..

Re: MPG question
60% city %40 highway 1/3rd heavy traffic in highway I get 28MPG average. Used same gas station (HESS). 2005 SAAB 9-2x NA 5 speed. I use neutral a lot, up-shift 2K rpm-2.25k rpm (drop to 1500), 5th gear city driving for locking a speed above 35mph (can't accelerate though). Trick is, lowest pedal at for given speed. In traffic use neutral, keep atleast 2-3 car distance -use that wasted idle power (clutch, no gas). Also in the city, try to hit all the lights, good timing and passing stupid slow illegals in vans is a plus.

Re: MPG question
My overall average was 27mpg in my old 02 2.5TS, and that was without an o2 sensor which was probably costing me one or two mpg. This was with 160,000 miles. I was pretty light on the throttle though, and I usually managed to not slow down for corners haha.
Try a good tuneup, new filters everywhere, new plugs and wires.
