New muffler?

Hey all--

I've got a '99 firebird (3.8L V6), and I'm wanting to have a new muffler put in (the one I have is rattling some, sounds horrible, and wasn't even made for my car, I'm told).

I don't want anything that will hurt my mileage, as this is my primary vehicle. I also don't want to spend more than $100. I'd like for it to sound a little better, and I'd definately welcome any gains in hp

So does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Re: New muffler?

Errr...bump?

I figured that I should mention that cost is probably my biggest priority, and that I don't really care how it sounds, as long as it doesn't sound worse than the stock one (I also don't want it to be ridiculously loud).

So any suggestions, or at least things to keep an eye out for?

Re: New muffler?

i would go with a single outlet 60 series flowmaster. the 80 series was designed for v8s and will sound very loud and raspy at high revs. the only muffler that sounds good at high revs on a v6 is borla, which is too expensive.

Re: New muffler?

Dynomax is a good and inexpensive system. They used to be Walker Dynomax and bought out Thrush, then they split and Dynomax kept Thrush.
I put one of their systems on my wife's 350 Formula and after a few months it finally "broke in" and now sounds mean.

Re: New muffler?

Well, I got my Dymomax muffler put in today (It's one of the "Ultra Flow Welded" ones).

I had some decently bad news, though-- my catalyct converter was all fucked up. Had to get a new one... that set me back $190, after labor ($40 labor). Looked up online after I got back home, and it looks like they kind of raped me on that one... bastards.

Oh well... sounds a ton nicer, and feels like I've gotten a little extra low-rpm power (haven't had a chance to take it on the interstate, yet... kind of excited to
