do i need smog?
i heard that if your car is over 25 years old then it is considered to be an antique. i also heard that antiques do not have to be smogged. my car is a 1979 pontiac firebird that has had a bigger engine put in it, but the engine does not pass smog tests in california. i want to know if i have to get it smoged for it to be leagle in california.
so any information would be helpfull
thanks

It depends on the state. Typically if your car was built after smog testing was enforced you have to pass smog testing. Which unfortunately is 75 i believe.

I think if your car was built with all the emissions crap its illegal to take it off.

Re: do i need smog?
I'm pretty sure California, EPA, and Uncle Sam all want that emissions stuff on there.
Back in the '90s the fines were between 3 and 5 thousand for the vehicle owner and over $25,000 for the fool taking the emissions stuff off, if caught. (real bad news if you were both)
I doubt the prices went down.
The 25 year thing is for special licence plates here. Its "Historic" then...
As for California's laws on that, probably even less fun....

Re: do i need smog?
Cali sucks when it come to emissions. I personally like global warming, its too damn cold in the winter...lol jk If I were you I would not take it off. All they have to do is pull you over and do a inspection and you're screwed by the big dick of the law.

Re: do i need smog?
It might be a long shot, but considering putting in a newer V8 like an ls1 in there. I would still make a bunch of power, but since its newer and has better smog equipment than anything from the 70s, you can get away with it. Also, you'd use a lot less gas.
Just throwing it out there.

Except that if they look at the engine and figure out it came from say a 2001 car, it will have to meet 2001 emissions standards. Where as if he were to put in a 403 or 400 (what the T/A's came with) he should only have to meet 1979 emission standards.

Gee, thanks for raining on my parade.
Still, people have gotten upwards of 400rwhp out of a modded LS1 and (barely) passed emmissions before. Again, just throwing a solution to the problem out there.
