Replace transfer case motor 2004 silverado?

I need to find out how to get the transfer case to 2hi manually so that I can install a rebuilt transfer case motor on a 2004 silverado 1/2 ton crew, 5.3 liter. The transfer case is a 246 model with NP8 option. The problem has been troubleshot by a chevy dealer as a "shorted encoder motor", they wanted $800 bucks, they say the transfer case is in 4hi but the front has not engaged. The trec fuse is blown but didn't blow again when I put a new fuse in, so I just put the blown one back in again. I replaced the autotrac switch in the dash for grins, that wasn't the problem.
I got an aftermarket transfer case motor and it says to put the transfer case to 2hi, as that is the position it is shipped in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Shane

Re: Replace transfer case motor 2004 silverado?

Hi... I've got the same issue with my 02 Silverado and the shaft on the new encoder motor I bought (50bucks! for a Dorman NP8) is nearly but not quite lining up with the transfer case. I have the truck up on jacks in neutral but still can't turn the cam on the transfer case. It feels spongy when I try to turn it with a cresent wrench and I'm afraid I'll break it. I've been told several times NOT to put power on the new motor and turn it to align it as it will lose it preset position ref. Any wisdom??

Welcome to AF
Best to start a new Thread with your problem.

Try turning the drive shafts by hand.
Or start the enguine and run it threw low and reverse and then back to neural and shut it off and retry it.
If you can not turn the shaft out of transfer case to 2W position there is a problem in transfer case.

And yes do not power the new motor unless it is installed.
