Alt. problems

The problem is coming from the wire for the voltage regulator. If i hook it up, the car wont run, take it off the car runs great with iffy idling at 1000 RPM's.
Does anyone know how to test this wiring area for voltage or a short.

It sounds like the car is running off the battery and your alternator is bad. I'd try loosening the + battery cable, starting it up, then removing the cable and see if the engine dies. If so, it's running off the battery and you need to replace either the voltage regulator or the alternator. If you have an auto parts store near by, run down there and have them check your charging system.
