Unhappy 2000 GTP Problems

I have a 2000 Ponitac Grand Prix GTP that died all of the sudden one night on the way home. Of course i wasnt driving my wife was. When i get there the car starts but dies seconds later. my first thought was the fuel pump. but my mechanic of the family didnt think that was the case since it was starting and running for a bit. So i proceeded to by fuel filter thinking that maybe it was clogged. So replaced it, ran better for a couple minutes then did the same thing. So now I was advised that it must be the pump. So i spent $274 dollars on a pump and still the same problem. Now my brother-in-law(mechanic) said that he found a resistor that he thinks is bad, in front of the pump circiut. Someone please HELP. Sorry for the short story.....

Re: 2000 GTP Problems

Same thing happened with mine. I believe it may be the relay or resistor, which I found out after replacing the fuel pump, which I do not think was the problem. Best of luck.

Re: 2000 GTP Problems

The fuel pump resistor is located in the RF fender, just behind the passenger headlamp assembly. If you check the tips and maintenance sub-forum and look for fuel pump resistor by-pass proceedure, follow the instructions. If the car starts and stays running, the resistor is bad. I would suggest replacing the resistor, but the car can be driven for a short time in by-pass mode if your local dealer doesn't have the resistor in stock (GM part# 88951182, retail $48.39).

Re: 2000 GTP Problems

Since you had two posts dealing with essentially the same subject, I merged them into one.

A fuel pump resistor slows the fuel pump down to eliminate fuel starvation due to excessive fuel returning to the tank under low boost/low rpm situations. Your problem is the classic sign of a failed resistor. The car will start, then die within 3-5 seconds.

Re: 2000 GTP Problems

Sorry that you wasted all that money on a fuel pump you didn't need. At least now you know where to come to get good info before you buy.

Also, I forgot to welcome you to AF, sorry about that. WELCOME!
