03 4Runner Fuel Grade

hey does anyone know what grade fuel the new 4runner uses (87,89,91)? edmunds and consumer reports say 91 octane but the dealer is telling me it runs on regular, does anyone know for sure?

Manual says 87 octane, 91 for better performance.

I've been running regular unleaded.
Runs great. No ping, etc.
Its a great truck

2003 limited 4 runner v8.
Dont know if v6 is any different on octane specs.

I know the v8's love premium... but it isnt required.

I have had a 2003 V8 Limited for 3 months. I use Octane # 87 with absolutely no problems. The manual does say that 91 can be used for improved performance but is NOT required. I have no idea why people are thinking that 91 is needed. Save your money

Tell me if I'm wrong, but i've been browsing info about the 4-runner, and from what I'me seen and read, the v6 4-runner requires the 91 fuel and the v8 requires the regular. It would sure be nice to be able to put the regular unleaded in a vehicle that says premium fuel.
I'm looking into buying a new 4-runner, and I would sure hate having to buy premium fuel for it.

Anyone know how many miles the 4-runner is designed to go if its taken care of?

JD: Though I own the V8 model, I have seen the owners manual for the V6 and it says EXACTLY the same thing as the V8 manual. 87 is fine but for improved performance 91 is recommended. It will run fine I am told by people who own it on 87. The V6 mind you is a higher compression engine than the V8 and under some load conditions might require 91. Again save your money and use 87.

Now if gas prices would just go down a little it would be easier to feed a SUV. lol

I don't know any figures, but it should all last a long time if you take proper care of it, Especially if you change your oil closer to every 3000 miles (even thought the manuel recommends 5000)

For the tranny, it might not hrt to add a big Trans cooler to help extend it's life

v8 regular is all that is needed
v6 toyota says 91 but you can run regular 89. 91 will give you better performance.

Well It's been 110 + out here in AZ and there are several hills, there has been no pinging on regular, so it should be good i most areas

Towing might reqire a higher grade gas but for most parts I would just use regular, I might have to try some 91 to see fi there is a notworthy pewrformance gain, but msot likely not

hello, this my first time on this site. i own a 2003 4runner 4x4 V8. when i accelerate to about 3000 rpm's, i get a strong sulfur smell. this usually occurs with the a/c off. i called my local toyota dealership, and they said that if was because off certain fuels contain sulfer, and they suggested to try different fuels. i currently use 87 octane and tried two different brands of fuels. i gave each band at least 3 tank fulls. so far the smell is still there. has anyone notice this odor? i'm still trying to find a fuel brand with less or no sulfur, but all fuel, i think, contains amounts of sulfur. i might have to switch to 93 octane. sorry that this post is so long, please advise and thanks.

the smell is normal for the 4runner, just try different brands. I use premuim in my 4runner and i like to use sunoco and hess they work the best for me. shell is a bad one i wont use it. also as the truck breaks in the smell will decrease slightly.

I've noticed on the new 4Runners a stinky rotten egg smell. I was wondering if going to a higher octane gas would fix the problem. From what I've heard Toyota doesn't have any plans for fixing the problem with changing the exhaust.

ALLyou have to do is cut of tail pipe and resonter and exit out the side behind mud flap no more smell inside
