1991 Ranger won't start

Working on a ranger. 2.9Liter. Won't start. New fuel pump and filter, New coil wire and distributor cap and rotor. Do the rangers have an engine control module or something like that, that could be bad. Seems to have spark. but like it isn't getting gas. Will check the fusable links in the selenoid wires going to the starter. If anyone has a suggestion please feel free. thank you.

Re: 1991 Ranger won't start

uPdate: Got it started. plugs were really fouled, but keeps carboning up. I believe it is the MAP sensor and will replace that. When it starts warming up it oscillates from 500 to 1000 on the tach. I think I am in the right direction now.

Re: 1991 Ranger won't start

They surely do. You have an OBDI system. I strongly recommend you take it in for a diagnostic ($90.00) to pinpoint exactly what's wrong. Otherwise it's gonna cost you replacing components which may not have anything to do with the initial problem. A car that does not start (assuming the battery is good) has problems associated with fuel and/or ignition. Whether it continues to run, how it runs and how it performs are the result of problems in other systems such as emission, etc.

Re: 1991 Ranger won't start

No problems with computer or MAP sensor. After it was running and started cleaning itself out. The next problem arrived. Probably the main culpert. It is the fuel pressure regulator valve. Putting a gage on the schrader valve while it was idling things were going good. after 10 minutes the pressure starts going wacky and the truck dies. Hard to start until it cools down. Will replace that and then to the next problem. Hopefully that will do it.
