Re: valve stem seals

I'm assuming your wanting to pull new valve stems through the hole in the wheels. Yes there is a tool that screws on the threaded end of the valve stem after you put it in through the hole. They should have this tool at any auto parts store

Re: valve stem seals

Do you have the head out? It's pretty tricky replacing valve seals in place? for one you have to have the rocker arm lossened or removed so you can compress the spring. Careful when you remove the snap ring as the valve may slide down the cylinder.

Re: valve stem seals

nope the the head was out, it is a wierd shaped head, with four big bearring stacks and metal houses for the springs, it doesn't even have rockers. the manual says ford made a special tool for it. but hell I still can't find it.

Re: valve stem seals

4 or 6 bangers? Either of this type engines have overhead cam. I've worked on both types and I don't recall anything but the standard 4 in line or V6 configuration. Sure would like to see it as you described.

Re: valve stem seals

Using a spring compressor but if you don't have the necessary tools, simply take the head to a parts jobber (auto shop) and let them check it out.

Re: valve stem seals

Ok, I found the tool at ford, the jobber shop priced it $250, i just stuck it back on. probably professionally rebuild the whole dang thing when I get the money. What brand of compressor you have? is it on the car or off the car?

Re: valve stem seals

You can get a valve job complete with new seals and your head resurfaced if necessary and the chamber decarbed for less than $250. Stay out of the dealers cause they'll soak you. There are lots of auto machine shops that do good and inexpensive work. I've used them before. Be aware however that with the valves tight your rings have to be in good shape otherwise you'll have blowby problems.

Re: valve stem seals

$250 did sound like alot to me too. I've had 5.0 strip heads built for less than that. I'm in a new town, so I'll look around some. What compressor do you use, I'd rather not buy an expensive ford tool, that I will only use once

Re: valve stem seals

I work part time for Pep Boys and we have loaner kits which you buy and when you return it within two weeks, you get your money back. I'm pressure we have the spring compressor kit. AutoZone I believe has the same service.
