87 heater intermittent no heat
This is in response to a thread I saw a while back concerning loss of heat from the heater. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread so here I am.
In the posts we had narrowed it down to a faulty temperature slide switch on the control panel. It normally slides laterally but I noticed if I forced it either up or down, the heat would return. I also noticed as I did that, a door actuator at bottom forward behind the center console would actuate allowing heat to enter the cabin. I finally got around to fixing it and it was fairly easy.
I removed the control panel and took it apart to inspect the circuit board. There are actually two, the main board and a smaller board the two connectors connect to. On the smaller board I found eight bad solder joints. All were cracked and seperating probably from torque stress from the connectors. I re-soldered them and the solder points for the switch itself, reassembled the panel and all is now well. Also fixed flickering panel lights in the process. If you have an 87 or therabout and need to try this I will gladly pass on the details.
