So my gut says no , but I know very little about cars , what do you guys think about buy a used car from Hertz? I drive past a Hertz lot everyday and they have some nice cars and seem willing to deal.....but who treats a rental car well? This car could have one heck of a checkered past. Can a good mechanic really fix the abuse of 100,000+ miles of rental use?
-Thanks in advance

You would do better to buy a used car from an individual than from a rental car company. Although they try to maintain their cars for the next person renting it they're not usually going to do major repairs on one and so with 100,000+ miles of abuse on the engine, transmission, and drivetrain means that one of them will need replacing very soon.

I'm hoping they'll let me see the mechanic records for the car, if not I think I'll shop elsewhere......would Carfax cover a car from Hertz?

If I were to purchase a rental vehicle I'd make sure and get one with the fewest miles on the odometer. I've seen what people put these vehicles through, many with the mentality of ,"Hey, it's not MY vehicle." The maintenance department can only do so much. I remember seeing videos on Youtube of people abusing rental cars, quite scary.

Exactly! "Drive it like you stole it..." comes to mind. There are so many options for used cars between auction sites, local sites (craigslist), dealers... I wouldn't expect a long-term relationship with a used rental car.

Good Luck!

A good mechanic can fix anything on a car.

I wouldn't consider a rental car if I was looking for a daily driver for me or someone else. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate (given the price is right) since i'd probably be modding the shit out of it and you're probably gonna replace all that other stuff eventually anyways.

True, but the cost of a mechanic fixing your recently purchased used rental car defeats the purpose of the "potential" good deal one is trying to get by purchasing a rental car. No money saved there...

However, as you also pointed out, if one would mod the crap out of it, then you're just buying the shell, so it doesn't really matter.
