Hey guys,

1994 Camry 4 cyl auto, 150k

I have been having intermittant accelerator sticking problems. I cleaned the throttle body as suggested by many on this forum. I even used a soft toothbrush this last time along with the carb cleaner, and put a spring to pull the linkage back down for an idle. It worked fine for a while, but is sticking again. Today, I almost didn't get the car stopped in traffic it was revving so high! I had to shut the car off in drive because I would NEVER let it rev up that fast in Park! To tell the truth, I was scared today, but yet thankful that the roads weren't icy!

Can someone give me an idea what to check out next? Could it be the throttle cable itself? A sensor causing it to rev up like that? I'm honestly afraid to drive the car now!

Try disconnecting the cable at the throttlebody and move the cable numerous times. Feel it stick? Change the cable. If you still have problems take it to a shop asap. If they work on it and it sticks again, you have a legal recourse if you hit something. As it stands, you're way out on a limb.

probably your iac valve causing this

Thanks for the reply RIP.....

(Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to the forum, but we lost power and phone for 5 days due to a major warm up and 65mph+ winds.)

I, again, took the throttle body apart and cleaned it out well with a soft toothbrush and carb cleaner. I then took the throttle cable off and doused it with PB spray to assure it wasn't sticking. I also took the cover off the cruise control linkage and PB sprayed all the cables and any part that moved.

So far, so good, but... I haven't gone more than a few miles from home. If it happens again I have no choice but to take it to the shop. I have done all that I can do at this point.

Thanks again,
Jackie

Thanks for your reply, but what is an IAC valve? Can this be tested?

Also, if it was the IAC valve, would the throttle work fine for a long period of time after cleaning, then all of a sudden start sticking again?

Thanks :-)

When the car rev high, unplug the Engine coolant temperature sensor, which is green and located on the engine block. You can download the manual in this forum to find it. If it goes down, change the ECT sensor.

On my '94 (4 cyl.) with the same symptoms it was the IAC valve.
Changed it out myself. I was told they're 'cleanable' but I spent the 250 clams for a brand new one three years ago, now, and the car runs beautifully.
My Haynes manual had the whole sequence written out.
Important - R&R the gasket, too.

Thanks Popeye...

I made sure I know where the temp sensor is via my Haynes book. I'm taking the car on a short trip tomorrow, and if it revs.. I'll be ready with your suggestion!

Thanks,
Jackie

Thanks QuincyGuy....

That's two votes for the IAC valve. Tomorrow, before I go to town, I'll take a look at my Haynes Manual to check it out . I hope they have cleaning proceedures, 'cause I can't afford $250 bucks for a new IAC valve!

I'll keep you posted, and thanks again! :smooch:

If anyone is following this thread.....

Yesterday, I drove the car approximately 120 miles. Those miles were both country and city, and since I cleaned the throttle body and lubricated the cable, the car ran flawlessly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and carrying the Haynes book and a can of PB spray with me at all times!!! Tomorrow, another trip to town where it scared the bejeezus out of me last week! And, to make it a real challenge, we are getting snow tomorrow! <gulp>

Thanks guys!
Jackie
