Engine overfilled with oil by .5qt, 2003 Camry
Hi,
I'm new to this forum.
I overfilled my Camry around 0.5qt of oil. Would this amount cause any problem such as a bearing failure or others? I have to drive 1900miles next week, and I want to make sure my car is safe.
If I have to drain out some amount, is it possible to use cheap hand pump fro m the top of the engine (oil filler cap)?
Thank you for you advise

It probably will not do any harm, but if you are going on a trip I would just drain out a bit from the bottom. This will at least give you peace of mind. You can not suction the oil out from the top of the engine. The oil drains down from the cylinder head through little small oil passages and resides in the oil pan in the bottom of the engine. You could drain a bit out in to a clean container, just in case you drain a bit too much out and have to later add some back in.

Thanks Mike.
I'm not in a place where I can do a car job (and no tools with me now).
Do you think it is worth going to a lube and spend money for draining some oil? Or is it just an overkill?

In actuality, probably not. That said, if you can find a place that will do it for you for like $5, it's probably worth that for the peace of mind I mentioned earlier. Maybe you will find someone who is still in the holiday spirit.

i overfilled last year by about the same amount and didn't bother draining till next change. no harm done. don't worry about it, it won't do anything.

From my experience, if you fill your engine exactly with the correct amount of oil as in the maintenance manual, you will end up with the oil level exactly 1/2 way between the full and fill marks which are 1 qt apart. If you overfill by 1/2 quart, your oil level should be at the full mark - which is fine.

Provided the pistons do not slap the oil, which is very hard to do. you simply extend the oils life by adding more, and decrease power as there's more of the crankshaft rotating into the higher oil level.
in your case you'd likely need to add atleast several more quarts for the engine to notice a differance or cause a problem. (at which point it'd most likely begin to leak out of the oil pan gaskets anyway as they're not designed to hold oil as a container, just keep it from seaping out)
and unless the engine is perfectly level and checked while hot and running. the oil level on the dipstick is a rather moot point anyway.
