SeatsToy Man 02-17-2003, 12:07 PM Once again I have checked various seat manufacturers and while there are a lot of seats there are no mounting brackets for a Xterra. I did notice that Corbeau offered Fontier brackets so I emailed them and here is their answer: "The Frontier brackets are for an Xterra also - (D1212T, D1213T)." I'm calling their local dealers. Will post if what I find. Toy Man ************************************************* More and more interesting. Visited a local dealer of Corbeau and Cobra. He said the same manufacturer makes the brackets for all of the seat makers. He called Cobra and Cobra said that they could special order the Frontier brackets. $125 and about two weeks to make. I think this is the same price as Corbeau only they are drilled for the Cobra seats. You order the brackets and they are yours whether they fit or not as Cobra did not know anything about Xterra's - just Frontier's. The dealer said you pretty much get what you pay for and recommended Cobra. Some other points: -It is very important that you trial set in the seats. Some of them that looked good felt horrible. -The Cobra's are made to fit a 38" inch waist max. with no wider models available. (I think). Some of the Corbeau's can be ordered in a wider size. -Do you need an adjustable seat back? -The Corbeau's only lock on one side and the Cobra's on both sides. -Not sure how the seat belt attachment point will be handled. (MIGHT be part of the custom tracks otherwise some sort of (jury-rig will have to be done.) My current thoughts are probably one of the Corbeau models because of the wider seat. ****************************************** And still more: The local dealership confirms that 2000 Frontier crewcab (but not KingCab) seat rails have the same part number. I received the following from Corbeau when I inquired about the seat belt attachment point. "If the stock seat belt attaches to the stock seat or to the bracket, then our bracket will have a receptacle for the seat belt. It is only there if needed. You would unbolt the seat belt from your seat or bracket and bolt it onto our bracket." rrdstarr 02-17-2003, 06:40 PM Cool! Have you called Beard http://www.redart.com/index2.asp, Mastercraft http://www.mastercraftseats.com/seats.html Premier http://www.racing-seats.com/cart/cart.cgi ? ChuckH 02-17-2003, 10:05 PM ToyMan have you sat in a Corbeau seat? Um, I have a wide ass, but even a skinny person would be uncomfortable and get beaten up in one on the trail. Would be fine for competition where you only sit in it for awhile at a time and you don't care about being all bruised to hell, but I would never be able to tolerate it for more than a couple hours on the trail, even if I were skinny. I sat in a lot of seats when I was looking and couldn't find one that I felt would be comfortable when bouncing around. Some of them I sat in for quite awhile and I would twist and bend in them like as if on the trail and most of them were downright painful and not just in the ass. Probably half of them I couldn't even get into. :o Anyway, after having the gel padding put in my seat and having the underpadding rebuilt it's really not bad at all and it looks like it belongs there. Nothing like the seats I had in my Audi but I can't expect that. At least I don't sink down into the metal anymore...lol! Anyway, I wouldn't just sit in them for a minute or two before deciding. You need to sit in those seats for a long, long time to really get an idea of what they are like. Toy Man 02-18-2003, 07:34 AM Rick: I checked their web sites. Gave up trying to make sense of Beard's site. The other 2 did not seem to have the reclining seats that I am looking for. Chuck: A quick 'sit' test just helps narrow down the selection. I agree that a long term test is what you need to do but not sure how to do that. My butt is ok after I had my seats re-shaped; it's the back that is 'killing' me. Toy Man Schludwiller 02-18-2003, 11:31 AM Go to the dealer. Test drive a 2003 that has Neoprene covers already on the redesigned seats. Take it home. Swap the seats. Put the cover back on. Take it back and say "I hate those stupid round lights". and go home to your new comfy seat. :) Seriously though. Did you ever check into importing those great looking offroad seats I posted? They're expensive, but not anymore than what you're probably looking at. ChuckH 02-19-2003, 12:02 AM Did you get the seatbacks restuffed too or just the bottoms? I had the bottom done with gel pad and it's great stuff, but to save money I just had them put an extra 1/2" thick foam padding in the back of my seat and it still made quite a difference. They also wrapped the frame bars in wear areas and wrapped the foam padding so it won't break down and slip over the frame. So far it's holding up well and I can't complain too much. Still, if I could find some comfy seats that looked like they belong in there I might do it. But I can sit in mine now for a long time without too much discomfort. Toy Man 02-19-2003, 07:05 AM Seriously though. Did you ever check into importing those great looking offroad seats I posted? They're expensive, but not anymore than what you're probably looking at I don't remember that post. What is the URL? I did look at Recaro. They have so many models (and high prices) that I sort of gave up on them. Did you get the seatbacks restuffed too or just the bottoms? I had the bottoms restuffed/shaped and the back reshaped (trimmed some from the lumbar pad and ??. The reshape of the back helped but my back still complains after several hours. Toy Man Toy Man 03-09-2003, 06:44 AM The reason I started getting serious about replacing the seats is that my lower back has been 'killing me' for since about November. Just as I was about to order some seats, I saw an ad for this product: Back rest (http://www.obusforme.com/products/lowback.htm) Thought I would try it before ordering new seats. It has made an AMAZING difference for me. (Your mileage may vary) Not cheap at about $90. They also make wide and tall versions. I have ordered a wide so I will have two - one for my office chair and one for the Xterra. Other than cost, the only drawback I have found is that it is about 3" thick which means you are forced forward that much. I was prepared to dislike this but find it actually has made no difference. Toy Man Toy Man 07-27-2003, 07:54 AM I was at a clients a couple of days ago and they had a Tempur-pedic seat cushion on one of their office chairs. Felt damn good so I stopped by Brookstone on the way home and bought one ($85). The seat cushion combined with my Obus Forme seat back is pretty darn nice. I spent 8+ hours running old logging roads in the coast range today and my bod feels great. Recommended. Toy Man Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
