Why hate?

Can someone please tell me why it is there are people who hate on BMW's and their owners for no reason? Ive been riding with friends and when a BMW passed us I said out loud "beautiful car" it was an M3 which deserves to be called such. But anyways, I hear from the back seat someone say "man those are so dumb, BMW sucks, only rich snobs drive them." can someone help me understand why my friends are so ignorant? You dont really have to be rich to drive a BMW, there are Buicks that cost more than some BMW's. And I happen to have a friend who drives a Z3 and he's a great guy, would do anything for anybody.
Now, Im not saying its just my friends who I have heard say things bad about BMW, its been people Ive heard in a park before or at the pool, why do they hate on such good cars?

I too am bothered by this. And am insulted and baffled by it. I could understand such being said about Mercedes (drivers and cars). A friend of mine drove a mid-nineties 740iL and was about ready for a new car. He thought he might take a look at the new s-class. So he took the 7 over to the merc dealership. He and his wife got out of the car and met a dealer. He told the dealer they wanted to see a new s-class. The dealer, having seen the BMW, said something to the tune of, "So we have decided to take a step up, eh?" Now tell me that is not snoby.
I agree that BMWs are nice cars. They are on the more luxurious and expensive end of the spectrum, but they are very performance oriented. I think we are due an explanation as to why BMW gets all the crap.

exactly. BMW and Mercedes are two big names in the states, especially with those who like to spend their money on new toys. However, a beamer is likely to cost much less than most Benz's, not to mention someone with a Benz usually thinks there car is the cream of the crop, which its not, I myself would rather have a Bentley than a Benz. And like the situation with the dealer? I would have said "Well, I was going to buy a car but, I think Ive changed my mind" and peeled out of there. So many people think their shit doesnt stink just because they drive a car that has the Mercedes emblem on it. Im not saying everyone, but there are a lot. The same can be true about BMW owners as well, but for the sake of this arguement, we'll just not worry about that...

BMWs are good cars. They have award-winning handling and suspension, many neat features, etc. Unfortunately owners like yourselves are given a bad rap by the many snobbish people who drive them. A friend of mine traded in his 1997 Nissan 200sx for a 1994 5-series, and now he (literally) thinks he's Pimp Daddy. The bimmer cost a whopping $8k.

Personally I'm not so much of a bimmer fan, as the styling doesn't do much for me (and hasn't changed enough over the last 20 years) and I'm a Nissan girl at heart. I have seen a lot of cocky jerks in BMWs driving too fast on business district roads, but I'm not going to let that color my opinion of all BMW drivers.

I agree the Merc dealer was out of line with his comment, but personally I'd prefer a Merc to a bimmer for many reasons. But that's just me. That salesman probably doesn't get many sales with that attitude.

BMWs and MBs are realy realy good cars!
The BMW isnt only for "rich snobs" its a good family compact car.
Your friends are the SNOBS not the people who own BMWs!
I don't like MB owners cause most of them "show-off" especially in europe!
Go get a BMW and start flashing your lights at me!

I have gotten attitudes from people for driving a BMW. Just for the car I drive! The only conclusion I can think of is that they are jealous, because I can't think of anything else. I mean they can't hate me for buying a foreign car because the US exports a lot more stuff than it imports from other countries. So what could be the real reason?

They are judging you based on experiences with other Bimmer drivers. They're not necessarily jealous...I mean, I think BMWs are nice cars and all, but they aren't ME. If someone gave me one, I'd sell it and buy something else...

But like I said above, not all Bimmer drivers are jerks, but many people assume them to be based on the small percentage that ARE jerks.

I think it is the jealosy thing.. I am a lowly carpenter and I pull up in my bimmer and people think I bought it to show off.. little do they know I paid 3000 for my ass haulin, smooth driving, safe car to haul my family of four in, when alot of the guys I work with are driving $30k trucks that they needed a loan to buy. I fell in love with my Bimmer from the time I test drove it... It wasn't the looks (doesn't hurt) it wasn't the leather (feels good all the same) and it sure as hell wasn't the name (except I know it will last me to 300k miles or more!) It is just the most fun car I have ever driven! It is a twisted world!!!

Jealous people suck! People say they hate these cars more than likely b/c they can't afford one and are extremely jealous and the easiest way to let out their "feelings" is to curse the car. Screw them, I have a huge problem with people who think people with nice luxary cars are snobs. Just look around all the different forums for all the different types of cars and see how nice everyone is. Ignorance is inevitable and I guess we have to accept that, but screw people who talk down about a car or a person b/c they are jealous.

Tell me about it, I just said that the headlights on a Lamborghini reminded me of a celica's and they would have linched me if I was there in person.
But I've noticed that when I give people a ride in my BMW their attitude is different, they seem to feel threatened. If they normally drive a Chevy they'll be like "would you have any grey Poupon" and jokes like that, I guess to make themselves more comfortable, or if a person rides in my car that usually drives a Toyota they'll be constantly talking about how cheap and reliable their Camry is. These aren't car people so I would not normally talk with them about cars. People fear perfection, and its price.

its nothing to do with jelousy its a simple fact that if you drive like the average bmw driver and cut people up etc and generally drive like you think you own the road and do not consider other roadusers then do not be suprised when they react to you.
I do 35000 miles a year and can honestly say that I see far more arrogant drivers in bmws than any other make (closely followed by mercs)
I do realise that many of you are perfectly considerate etc.....but the ones that get noticed are the others
Once you get a bad reputation it takes a long time to change it so you are stuck with being hated for a long time to come and all because you were in a hurry and pushed in in front of me

You see, the world has two different kind of people, the sloths and the go-gettems. People that drive BMWs drive them because they have the money because they go out and earn it. The sloths just sit back at work, performing at their minimum just to get by without getting fired. BMW people have places to go people to see, the last thing we want is a sloth driving a Nissan in front of us slowing us down. So what may seem like you're getting cut off, is what a BMW driver has to do to keep sloths from slowing their lives down. So it is "Jealousy" because you sloths can't compete at work, make the money, and buy a god damned real car.

Jealousy- plain and simple- nothing more

I really don't envy Bimmer drivers- in Auckland- where I lived for about 3 years- every 3rd car was a BMW- so they are pretty mainstream in my view

They aren't luxury cars IMHO- they are more of a sprts car- BMW are still the knig of driving dynamics
