I'm new here and I'm sure this has been covered so bear with me. How the heck do you change the headlight bulb in a 2000 beetle?

That's a great help! My manual says to let the stealership do it but I just can not bring myself to let a dealer change a friggin headlight. I guess I'm old school in many respects.

No problem, and I agree, some things should be left to the dealer, but changing something simple as a bulb is something most people can do themselves.
The worst part is that they probably made a small "fortune" on the strange headlight assembly alone.

Thank you, Thank you Thank you for posting this information on the web!!! I am a young widow, who has just purchased a 2000 Beetle in September. I went on a short vacation to New Orleans and my low beam headlight went out on the drivers side. I've several brothers and several widower friends looking at it and scratching their heads at how to get to the housing to change the bulb.
After doing a search and finding your thread, I printed out the instructions and viola - the bulb is changed and we have headlights!!!

My son owns a 2000 VW New Beetle 1.8T which also now requires rhe headlamp replacement on the drivers side. I would really appreciate your assistance in replacement, as the link above doesn't work. Is there anything else that I can use for resources to change the headlamp ourselves. Thanks...

Please repost the answer to this question! How do I pop out that light fixture so that I can get at the bulb and avoid paying the outrageous VW service charges! Thankyou!

Pop the hood and look for the metal lock lever (kind of operates the same way the old canning lids work) and release. Then locate the plastic "catch lever" which you'll pry up. You should see it above the battery. You will then have unlocked and released the headlamp fixture, and it should pull straight out of the fixture socket. Simply reverse after changing the bulb, making sure you align the plastic guids correctly (they can be easy to try to force back in incorrectly - but if they are not aligned, you won't be able to lock the unit back in place). Hope that helps. If not, make the dealer show you how its done.

I GREATLY appreciate the information I found here, however I found that on my daughter's 2001 Beetle, there was no "canning jar" lever. On her model, there is a button beside the plastic lever that is depressed, allowing the lever to be rotated upwards. The button is...ahem...cleverly marked so the dealer knows it's been "tampered" with! Anyway, I couldn't have done it without the help of this forum otherwise...THANKS!
