2002 escort thermostat repair

Hello, Im about to change the thermostat in my 2002 escort and was wondering where its located in this model and how much of a hassle it is to change. I know the older models had them in the upper hose which were easy to change but someone told me it was built in somewhere and took a while to repair and would need a kit unless they meant the thermostat and gauge all in one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 2002 escort thermostat repair

Here's what to expect if you have a 2.0 SPI 97-02.

Follow the top hose to the engine. Pull the upper hose. Remove the bolts and pull the housing cover. Remove the rubber seal. Install the new thermostat in the housing with the spring end going into the engine. Make sure the rubber seal is fully compressed inside the housing and align the thermostat tabs with the slots in the housing. If the bolts are frozen don't apply more pressure to them, they will break (twist off). Instead, tap the ratchet with a small hammer. It will slowly break them loose.

Attatched to the housing are the temperature sensors for the computer and the gauge. Also, the heater hose inlet is attatched. You don't need to take these out to change the thermostat.
