Re: check coolant light

Check the coolant reservoir. The light will come on when the level of coolant in the overflow or reservoir is below a certain point. Fill it with a 50% antifreeze and 50% water. When the antifreeze gets low in the cooling system it draws coolant from the reservoir when the engine is shut off and it cools down. Check the level in the reservoir for a while to determine if it is using coolant. If you are getting a false signal, check the wiring for tightness on the reservoir sensor.

Re: check coolant light

We have a 92 Escort. The 'check coolant' light comes on from time to time - but the coolant level is always fine. It has been doing it occasionally for several years. I can make it go out by pulling the connector off the top of the coolant overflow bottle, and cleaning the mating contacts with a toothpick. I check my coolant at least once a week, and before long drives, and recently replaced the water pump and all of the coolant hoses in the car.
So the light doesnt alarm me anymore.
